Mission: Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder
Location: Various

ON:

The sleek form of the Intrepid USS Ranger disappeared into the opening mouth of the Spacedock. The silver doors smoothly glided closed behind the blue and red hue of her extended warp nacelles as she delved deeper into the chasm.

"Slow to thrusters," was all that could be heard as the hushed silence of the bridge amplified the remaining moments of the drawn-out mission they had just completed. Elsie tapped her lower lip with her slender fingers as the hustle and bustle of the interior of Starbase 116 was being displayed on the viewscreen.

"USS Ranger, this is Commander Bishop. You are cleared to dock."

Elsie remained seated for a moment, the rest of the bridge crew eagerly awaiting the order to 'down tools' and secure the ship before a week's worth of time was theirs to spend how they so wished. Halliwell had arranged for the Starbase to complete the re-supply and maintenance to her ship but knew that certain crewmembers would not be passing over their duties so readily.

She activated the central display screen and then hammered in a few commands before mindlessly tapping her commbadge. "All hands, this is the captain. Secure your stations and await the maintenance crew of Starbase 116 to over-take your duties. Report back on board in seven days. Your time, until then, is your own. Halliwell out."

Vignettes

A sigh escaped Jimmy as he acknowledged the announcement of the captain. He couldn't wait to put his feet up, clog over a beer and just see what happens. In either case, he decided to visit that quaint little bar on the starbase he visited two years ago as soon as the maintenance crew would arrive.

Cedric adjusted his cap in the mirror, then slung the golf bag over one shoulder. The clubs nestled tightly, and the drawdown orders firmly in Fletcher's hands, he sauntered into the corridor and headed for the transporter room.

For someone like Kendrick, the word or act of shoreleave almost seemed superfluous. She used to have a few hobbies, things she enjoyed doing in what little downtime she had, but since that day on Tremas, all that had to go out the window. It was one of those annoying gripes she carried with her on a daily basis, and it gnawed at her insides knowing that there were things that she was not able to do any longer due to her injuries. When she 'retired', that was the last shoreleave she's actually had. When she rejoined the service, work was all she had left to do, and so she done it, and well. The call for shoreleave from Captain Halliwell spelled the uncomfortable reminder that there was no such thing or word in Alex's vocabulary, and the gnawing feeling returned to twist her gut again.

Her investigation still not concluded because of the circumstances of the recent missions of the Ranger, the brasses patience was on the fence between aggravated and mediocre interest. And Kendrick was feeling the same. Through her observations and the brief interviews she'd already done, her opinions of Halliwell and her crew had from the time she came aboard improved... slightly. What would happen over the next few days as part of shoreleave was anyone's guess, but one thing was certain, Alex would have no part in it.

T'mpest waited patiently while the ship docked and the bridge crew was dismissed. Outwardly, she was busy communicating with the various departments and arranging shore leave rotations. Inwardly, she was waiting for Vlad to finish securing the Ranger so she could talk to him about shore leave. They'd both been so busy with the mission they'd barely had time to say hello to each other and T'mpest hoped the next seven days would go a long way towards making up for that.

The handover to the station's maintenance team felt like an age to Dylan Blake as he fought to keep his patience in check. He was desperate to escape the familiar surroundings of the Ranger to frolick on the starbase, ideally with Sehra, but he was certain he could entertain himself otherwise.

"Anything else?" he probed impatiently, having stilled his tapping foot with a scowl.

"That is all I require. Please enjoy your leave, Lieutenant," the Vulcan relief officer said evenly as she turned to look over her shoulder. But Blake was already moving after hearing, "that is all," leaving her to shake her head and wonder how such Humans could function on a starship rationally.

Marc had only recently arrived on board and shore leave so soon was not what he considered practical. Hence he decided to remain on board at least for the early stages of the overhaul and resolved to keep his intentions quiet so as to not attract well-intentioned but unwelcome invitations to social activities.

Jensar stowed the last of his gear away, realizing that he had really only just made it aboard the Ranger. Strangely, however, he felt as though he had been here for a while. It was odd to feel that way, especially for him, but his feelings could never lie -- at least not to him. Still, Barim knew that a week, while only seven days, was never time to waste. Thus, standing up from his last drawer, he turned to face the mirror before him, brushed the hairs from his eyes, and exited his quarters. He would return, but he also needed to blow off a little emotional steam before going out for an extended tour with the Ranger. . .especially with the probability of Cadets being present.
