472 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Balowlli System
Location: Captain's Ready Room
Timeline: Current

The ship's communications blipped in Captain Kerr's office: "This is... civilian Holly to Captain Kerr."

On hearing the com, a curious expression grew across the captain’s face. Tapping his combadge, he replied, “This is Kerr, Holly. How can I help you?

"Captain... Could I have a word with you, please?"

“Of course. I’ll meet you in my ready room.

A few minutes later, the captain's ready room chime sounded.

“Come in, he replied, sat at the couch in his office before the reflective window displaying flashes of streaming stars striping across the blanket of blackness.

The door opened, and Holly stepped in. "Captain" she stood courteously, pretty much a complete opposite of T'kaarch's usual manner.

“Holly, come in, please. Take a seat. What’s troubling you?

"Captain, I..." Holly started as she took a seat, "I feel... useless." She righted herself. "As you know, I've always been helping Capt... Excuse me, Ensign T'Kaarch. I steadied the shuttle, watched the database, gave T'Kaarch lessons in courtesy..." She smiled as she mesmerized about the clumsy cat. "But now, all I'm good for is being told how he likes the CSO Larkin..." She looked down and sulked.

Kerr’s face softened slightly as he understood the hologram’s concerns. Tilting his head to the side, he smiled warmly and offered a cup of coffee on the table before her, remembering her. “Well, he said after inhaling and blowing the air out through his cheeks, “what exactly did you have in mind? There’s plenty of opportunity onboard the Archimedes should you go looking for it. And I’m sure I can help you out any way I can.

She closed her eyes, and seemed to think for a second. "Captain, I would like to become an advisor of sorts. I'm programmed for courtesy, I've seen my share of things T'kaarch got himself into, I think I could advise you, or your crew, on different situations..." She thought for another second. "I don't think I'd need a rank... I am a hologram."

“Well, he said, thinking silently for a moment, “you have your pick of departments with us. You can contact Lieutenant Lucy Carter, our ship’s counsellor to assist her, or even Lieutenant Yvette LaFaal of our diplomatic department. Either can help you with that.

"Very well... So I'm free to talk to them and help out?"

“Of course, he replied, nodding.

"Thank you, captain," Holly stood up, looking better, refreshed even. "If you'll excuse me, I'll go and find Lieutenant Carter or Lieutenant LaFaal." She kept standing there, waiting to be dismissed, but her whole attitude had a bit more flair to it then it used to.

“Dismissed, Holly, he said, after hitting on the reason she was still stood there.
