"Varik!" Jubb spat, "Not only a traitor to your own people, but that of outsiders as well. I trusted you. I helped you. I gave you technology to complete the objectives, and now here you stand as if you hold no guilt at all. You're as lost as they are. You, all of you are a lost people," he screamed before finishing darkly, "I will see this place burn, and I'll see all of you burn right along with it!"
[NEW]
"No, Admiral. You are guilty of murder, treason, attempted genocide and violations of the Prime Directive," T'mpest said, her tone glacial. "You are a disgrace to everything Starfleet stands for. You will stand trial here for your crimes. You owe the Lantiri that much."
Jubb, now almost foaming at the mouth if not for his overgrown beard, just stood, his face a bright pink.
Slowly and deliberately, T'mpest walked up to Jaenero and handed him the evidence she and her bridge crew had compiled in the past hour. "This should be more than enough evidence," she said. "Of his guilt and my crew's innocence."
Keen was observing the 'Admiral's' actions and expressions; this man was more than disturbed, delussional is a good word. He thinks he is in the right and that he is justified in his actions. So like the Cardassians that had held Keen; this 'mock trial' was so much like those in teh camps Keen was more than frozen thinking of what would come of this. To be killed for another's actions is not uncommon; to die by association with a Mad Man is something that had never occurred to Keen even as he wallowed in the misery of the camps during the war.
He could not do anything but watch.
Jaenero took the 'evidence' slowly glancing it over on the padd. "And what about you?" he finally said, turning to Jubb. "Do you have any more to say?"
Jubb breathed hard for several seconds before answering through clenched teeth, "No."
"No!" Rylie shouted, suddenly clearing through the foggy noise of everyone's thoughts and picking up on the very specific and clear intentions of Maas, but she was too late.
Varik Maas had already surreptitiously unholstered his side arm, "Good." he said simply before aiming it directly at Jubb and pulling the trigger. The round hit its mark spectacularly, and Jubb's head snapped back, his face contorted into an expression of surprise and horror, before his great girth collapsed backward onto the floor, like a massive oak tree being cut down in the forest, a circular bullet wound planted neatly in the centre of his forehead.
Adriana screamed as the firearm discharged; it had been pointed in the general direction of her husband and she thought her heart would stop for a moment until she saw Admiral Jubb collapse. She tried to run, to break through the guards and get to the other prisoners, but they held her back. They didn't hurt her; she was obviously unarmed and no threat to them, but they weren't about to let her through. They pushed her back firmly but not roughly, then lifted their weapons again, making it clear that anyone in a Federation uniform was walking on thin ice right about now.
T'mpest took a step towards Maas, but there was nothing she could do. She turned to Jaenero. "Governor. Before you continue with your vendetta, look at the evidence. My people are innocent of all charges. Varik was misguided and your people need to heal. For the sake of your people, stop this now and let us help you."
For his part, the events that had unfolded just in the last few minutes were a little overwhelming. The Federation butcher of so many of his people lay dead in the middle of the council floor, a homeland criminal stood in his midst having just dispatched that butcher. And then there were these people from the Federation. Associated by organisation with Jubb, supposed evidence of their innocence in his hand. He was unsure of what to do. But, there seemed little gain continuing for now. "I..." he started before faltering a moment looking at the ensemble of people around him, but continued on direct, if a bit quietly to T'mpest, "I will examine your evidence, commander."
A few seconds passed before Jaenero did anything else. "Guards, keep these people here, especially that one," he motioned to Varik before turning quickly to T'mpest in an attempt to allay any thoughts of trickery. "You would do the same, would you not? I will keep my word and look at what you have brought. I will return within the hour, and if it is proved to be genuine without any shadow of doubt, we will begin again." And at that Jaenero exited the chamber with his aides.
T'mpest nodded as she watched Jaenero exit the room. All things considered, it was a very positive response.
Keen rose and started to move , he was slow and his eyes were locked on the fallen Jubb. Keen went silently, the guards had weapons and would kill him if he flinched but the Prophets would protect him as a sacred duty; not for the Prophets but then Keen knew other belief systems from the war. He knelt beside the man and 'crossed himself' as the Priest had taught Keen before that human was put to death, and slowly gave the quiet words known as 'Last Rites' to a man who had died, maybe even some kindness to his soul as delusionary people are not evil in their hearts, just sick in their minds.
Not that Keen wanted to excuse the situation; it was more out of what Keen did so many times in the camps; watching someone killed snapped the numb Keen into yet another bit of the camps; he had done this many times, 3464 souls had fallen in the camp, twenty two before Jubb and now yet another soul was departing. It was appropriate that Keen send it off; at least a chance at redemption?
