What a week it's been. I have had the good fortune to receive a promotion from the newly promoted Captain Lane. I feel honoured. It was a surprise ceremony and I was rather nervous! I shall do my best to live up to the expectations of the ship.

I had another surprise this week. I received a letter from an old... acquaintance of mine, Maria Traho. We were at the Academy together although I am not sure how she graduated. She never seemed to do any work and sharing a room with her was always an interesting experience.

Maria never went to bed before midnight and was frequently late for class. A popular girl, though. I should know - I had to try to sleep through many of her, er, escapades.

I wonder why she is writing to me now though? She has not made contact for so long. She didn't really say much except that she had "stuck it lucky". Perhaps I shall never know.
