796 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Rumours, Promises, and Lies
Location: Shuttle Bay
Timeline: Current

ON:

"Lieutenant, we're coming up on the Ranger now," the Provo's commander shouted from the cockpit. "You should get ready to disembark as soon as we touch down."

"Yes, Sir," Reo called back from his cot. What little room he had in the cramped runabout was taken up by his ruck sack. "Has Captain Halliwell been informed of my arrival yet?"

"We sent a message to her but I'm not sure if she's read it yet," the Commander said as he Moved the Provo close to the Ranger. "Regardless we will be docked with the Ranger momentarily.

Reo sighed as the all to familiar feeling of passing through a vacuum field. "We have touchdown, sir," the ship's pilot announced as the mag-locks engaged. As the rear hatch lowered Reo grabbed his gear and pushed himself through the hatch.

BRIDGE

"Captain," Ensign Lynch called out as his Ops terminal began to tweet and chime rather loudly, the smattering of lights now occupying his eyes. "We've just received a request to dock." His face was confused as he looked up to gauge her response.

"Request from who?" Elsie asked, her brows knitting together in dismay.

"It's a Federation runabout on our aft. Dispatched from Deep Space Five. We haven't seen its approach because of the sensors. And the nebula has masked what little we should have been able to detect."

Elsie hesitated. Was this a rouse? A way to infiltrate her ship? She didn't know but she thought quickly.

"Ensign, let them in. But seal off the hanger. I'll meet them there myself. She turned to Augusta and simply said, "With me."

DOCKING BAY

Elsie walked in to the shuttle bay with Augusta and two other security crewmen framing her either side. She shot Augusta a look and then rounded up to Reo who had already vacated the shuttle. "Captain Halliwell. And you are?"

"Lieutenant Reo Snowpaw MD," Reo Dropping his Rucksack to offer a Crisp salute. It fell to the floor with a heavy metallic clunk. "Command dispatched me to serve as the Ships doctor but the ride from earth would have delayed the launch of the ship," he sniffed the air hesitantly. "It seems like the crew is a bit on edge captain."

Elsie squared up to him and took the PADD delicately from his paw-like hands. "I'm not sure if you've experienced the same," she began, looking at him closely, "but our communications are hampered. As is most of the ship. I haven't received these orders from Command."

"Well that might explain why we didn't receive confirmation messages from you," Reo said quietly as he picked up his rucksack again. "Sorry for the inconvenience, Ma'am. As you can assume it was far from my intentions to cause any trouble."

Elsie narrowed her gaze and then read the PADD again. "I'm sure it wasn't," she snapped, placing the PADD down by her side. "You've come an an opportune moment, Lieutenant," she added, turning her back on him and expecting him to follow. "Our chief medic, Doctor Fox, is currently in status due to an accident in Sick Bay. You'll be acting chief until his position can be reassigned or he recovers, which looks unlikely. I believe Engineering have cleaned up the mess from the explosion."

"A...an explosion you say," Reo swallowed loudly. "Mind if I ask what caused the blast?"

"We're unsure, if I'm honest," Elsie replied, rounding the corner as they exited the shuttle bay, hands clasped behind her back. "We've experienced several power fluctuations that we can't assign a cause to."

"Well it sure sounds like I've got my work cut out for me," Reo sighed his ears drooping slightly. "So do you have any questions for me or do I just get thrown into the Sickbay to get to work finding what's causing the air to be so full of stress hormones. It's literally sickening to those of us with the nose to smell it."

Elsie stopped and turned to face him. "Get stuck in, Doctor. And let me know if you need of anything. You'll need to hit the ground running as we seem to be in the middle of things at the moment. Speak to our chief counsellor, Commander Keen. He may be able to get you settled somewhat."

"Yes Ma'am," Reo said as his tail resumed its regular tempo. "Don't worry about me ma'am I really don't need much to be happy, so as soon as I find my quarters and get to work I will be fine." He paused as he reached a fork in the corridor "I guess I will see you on alpha shift then ma'am," Reo said cheerfully as he stepped off for the sick bay.
