Mission:
Sowing the Seeds
Location: Bridge, USS Ranger
Timeline: Mission Day 4, 0900 hrs
ON:
After Halliwell and Jenner had exchanged strained goodbyes, Elsie returned to her captain's chair as the viewscreen reverted back to an exterior view of space within the Calamai Sector. She sighed, gave Lieutenant Cooper a nod and said, "Relay the set of start-out coordinates to the helm," and then switching her attention to Zhukov added, "we'll set sail in a minute or two."
"Aye aye, Capt'n!" Jimmy said, carrying on the naval theme.
Tapping her combadge, Elsie called up the Engineering diagnostic on her central display between herself and T'mpest and raised Stensrud on the internal comm. "Engineering, what's your status?"
"Still awake, Captain." Other than the slightest trace of an accent around her 'Ts,' Mikaela delivered her summation of Engineering's tranquility since departing port in deadpan.
T'mpest was going over all the status reports. The Captain would need the major departments' reports, but it was her job to be aware of all the departments and be sure they were ready.
"Captain," Jimmy said, "The last of the cargo we've requested from the Dubai has been transported to Cargobay One and... uh, hmm, that's strange..."
"Lieutenant?" Elsie questioned, turning in her seat to view him fully.
"Nothing, Captain. Probably just a glitch on my screen." That, or the Dubai just refilled the captain's liquor cabinet. "Anyway, ready to go."
Elsie narrowed her gaze onto Jimmy and furrowed her brows for a second before nodding to Blake and adding, "Run a diagnostic of the sensors to be sure, Lieutenant. I don't want to head on out to catalogue this sector with faulty sensors."
"Right away Captain," Blake had in fact had already started the investigation program following Cooper's hesitation eager to prove to scientist there was nothing wrong except his beady eyes.
Elsie wasn't the only one to look over at Jimmy, as Alex glanced across from her position just behind the barrier separating the command chairs from the master systems display. For now she said nothing, and with her recent confrontation with Captain Jenner, she wished that she was able to telepathically read people without physical contact.
Turning now to T'mpest, Elsie declared rather loudly, "Let's take her out, shall we?"
"Aye, ma'am. I think it's about time we had our own look at this area."
The blackness that now framed the sleek Ranger was peppered by distant stars that pin-pricked the blanket beyond. As she and the Dubai parted ways, her compact outline seemed dwarfed by the colossal Galaxy class turning and pulling away from her, both vessels now slowly sinking further from each other. Elsie still couldn't quite shake off the awkward feeling that she -- and the crew -- had suffered from since they entered the sector but in the interests of the mission and her own paranoia, she was now doing everything in her authoritative position to quash the unease spreading through her crew.
