After a three hour walk, a complete misdirection detailed by a local Overtonian and with her patience now wearing thin, Captain Halliwell finally happened upon Mrs. Gray and Lorelai de Winter very near to where she had started off from. Not wearing combadges themselves, and with the humanoid population of Overton mainly consisting of human settlers, locating to the two ladies had proved trying. It didn’t take long however, once the formalities and logistics of bringing them and their belongings onboard were organised, for the resident archaeologist (and to Halliwell’s mind, ignorant busybody) to start poking her nose into their affairs on the fringe and begin bartering for a spot on the Ranger to ‘assist and oversee’ to project.
“Unfortunately, Ms Mar, this investigation is mine to conduct, and I no doubt feel that your experience with the object would assist us greatly but I simply cannot allow you to dictate details to me again.†Halliwell felt as though she was banging her head against a proverbial wall but did genuinely note the merits of her presence. “You may come with us as an observer, Ms Mar, but not as a facilitator. That just simply won’t do.â€
"Captain, I have no intention of telling you how to run your investigation. I am, however, concerned with the lost artifact. I am the expert in such matters and am the only one who can ascertain whether the artifact has been compromised. If I'd been there in the first place, the device would never have gone missing."
“That isn’t exactly accurate, Ms Mar, is it?†Halliwell retaliated, looking coolly upon her opposition. “It isn’t just the artifact that is missing, but an entire ship and her crew.†She stopped herself before antagonising the woman (and herself) further, took in a breath and then looked upon the innocence of young Rory for calm. “I don’t doubt that your assistance with the object could have helped whatever situation Captain Kerr has gotten himself into… however, that is not our concern. If you would like to join us, then you are welcome.â€
The words jarred from the captain’s mouth as she unsuccessfully attempted to sound congenial and friendly once again.
Teegan could have explained that a few lives lost were sad, but not as tragic as the potential scientific breakthrough the artifact represented, but she could see that the other woman would not understand. She was more concerned for the missing Federation people. So, for once, Teegan said nothing. Instead she smiled politely. "I accept your offer." Once she was on the ship, she could work on getting the artifct back.
"Good," Halliwell said authoritatively. "We leave orbit in an hour. Contact the Ranger when you are ready."
The captain then turned to Mrs. Gray and Rory and said, "Come with me, and I'll get you settled on the ship." She smiled widely and uncharacteristically at the girl, whilst giving a knowing wink to her governess. Tapping her combadge, she said, "Halliwell to Ranger. Three to beam up."
