Coffee, Commanders and Chiefs

Posted on Tue Feb 17th, 2009 @ 6:53pm by Captain Elsie Halliwell & Master Warrant Officer Sam Jackson

552 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Citadel Prime
Location: Bridge
Timeline: Current

As Lane walked onto the Bridge, his Chief Operations Officer was manning his own station. Rounding the back of his chair, Commander Lane peered over his shoulder and cleared his throat as not to startle the gentleman.

“Working late, Mr. Jackson, are we? he asked with a jesting-tone. “How are things working out onboard for the department with you? Do you have everything working at peak efficiency as yet?

He smiled to convey his jovial tone. “I read the report on the malfunction in the Science lab earlier today; I suppose it may be a few weeks before we identify and correct all the kinks in her armour, eh?

"Nothing major there sir" Sam paused a moment "I was actually just double checking for the same fault in the other systems. You're working pretty later yourself sir"

“I suppose once you sit in that chair, late nights become something of a habit, almost. He laughed, but then paused, considering what he had said. “Now that you come to mention it, I could use a little break.

Turning to a young Ensign working on a console just to the left of the two men, he said, “Ensign Foster. Take over from your Chief. I believe he is running a few system diagnostics. He smiled at Mr. Jackson and said, “If you’ll come with me.

As they broke away from the Bridge, he lowered his voice a little. “Coffee… in the Mess, Mr. Jackson. You look like you could use a break, too

"Sure sir" he paused "Probably a good idea."

“Good, Lane replied. As they boarded the turbolift, he commanded “Deck Two, please.

The silence in the turbolift is always expected, and it was not until they were both sat at a table, drinks full to the brim in front of them, that Lane broke it.

“So, Mr. Jackson, how are you finding it aboard the Arch? Your service record is rather a myriad of ship classifications and I am interested to canvas your opinion on the feisty little Nova.

"Well she's a fine ship from what I've seen sir" he paused "She's got nearly as much in the way of science as the Monterrey or the Constantinople and for a small ship, she appears more cosy than an Intrepid or the Sabre, crew quarters are pretty good here."

“I have to agree with you, there, Chief. She is cosy. And she works, so what more could you wish for? he smiled.

"For the most part she works" Sam smiled "Nah I'm joking with you Commander, should be a great little ship."

“Well, thank you very much for saying so, Mr. Jackson. Someone as seasoned and experienced as you knows a thing or two about these things, he laughed. “How are the crew performance stats coming along? Commander Arkham was telling me that you were working your way through them… Anything glaring that needs settling before we throw ourselves into this mission fully? he asked, sincerely.

"Oh I've one or two men with a somewhat checkered career, but nothing major." Sam paused before continuing "How’s your new command treating you?"

“Very well, I have to admit, Mr. Jackson… Very well indeed.
