Mission: Citadel Prime
Carter finished the report and put down the PADD on the desk in her office. The last few days had seen a variety of the ship's crew coming through her doors for their psychological evaluations and she had spent many hours filling out reports as a consequence. She yawned and rubbed her face, her blonde hair falling from behind her ears. All the crew were interesting to talk to - all different with their stories to tell. Some willing to divulge their pasts, some not. What they didn't know was that Carter spent a good deal of her time just observing them in action.
Sniffing, she shook her hair back and prepared for the next patient. She picked up her PADD and saw there were 10 minutes until the appointment with Chief Warrant Officer Jackson. Tapping her PADD she scrolled through to his service and medical history, refreshing herself with the key points and awaited his arrival.
Just at that moment, Sam tapped the door chime. He was a little early, but then he did want to get this out of the way quickly.
"Come in" said Ensign Carter, getting to her feet. The door slid open and Chief Warrant Officer Jackson was standing behind them.
"Sorry I'm early Ensign, I had a little spare time and figured I'd pop on over."
"That's fine, sir" said Carter, smiling at him, warmly. "I am Ensign Lucy Carter, the ship's counsellor. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to come to see me. Please - take a seat".
"No dramas Counsellor" Sam moved on into the room and then as asked took a seat
"How are you settling into the routine of daily life aboard, Chief Warrant Officer? I must admit, I find it enjoyable to have a busy day."
"Well, I've not been aboard long Counsellor, but it's certainly been fun so far." Sam paused "And I imagine your schedule will thin somewhat with such a small crew."
"There is always work to be done, Chief". It was true - even off duty, Carter couldn't help but assess the other crew members. She needed to keep her mind constantly active to stave off the boredom that so easily crept up on her.
"I must now ask you a series of questions required of my by Starfleet. Your answers will be treated confidentially and please answer as honestly as you can.
"Have you ever had feelings that you wanted to harm another sentient being?"
"How badly?" Sam paused "Because I've seriously contemplated punching hundreds of superiors and subordinates. I've also obviously thought about hurting people during the War, even killed one, but I never pre-meditated any of them, it's all heat of the moment stuff."
Carter asked the four other questions that were so compulsory and so intrusive. She often wondered why people didn't get more angry when she was asking them or if they realised it was HOW they answered them that was more telling. She made notes on her PADD and nodded at each response.
Questioning over, she asked "so, Chief, tell me. What makes you tick?"
"What makes me tick?" Sam paused "Well I'd guess work wise, I love playing with machines, tinkering with them, repairing them you know." he paused "And off duty I'm pretty much the same, I usually relax by using the holodeck for some ancient engineering work."
"Ah, a grease monkey!" said Carter with a smile. "Hands on experience can be so rewarding, can't it? Do you repair old machines on the holodeck? How do you get past the safety protocols with all those poisonous carbon monoxide emissions?"
"Usually, by turning them off." Sam chuckled "Short term it's never bad"
"Well I must say it's been a pleasure talking to you, Chief. I dare say our paths will cross in the near future." Smiling, Carter got up from her chair.
"Indeed." Sam paused a moment "I'll see you around Ensign"
