Mechanic's Mate

866 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Balowlli System
Location: Sickbay

The stinging sensation was so harsh it bought a tear to the grey eyes of Dylan Blake as he cradled his wounded arm en route to sickbay.

He cursed himself as he walked, a silly mistake that hurt like no tomorrow. Why didn't he isolate the relays before he started to make the necessary adjustment? At least the blistering burns across his fingers that stretched up his right arm would be a lasting reminder to be more cautious.

Doctor Fox was twirling a PaDD stylus around his finger absently as he stared at the large computer panel before him, slowly reading through the list of crewmen who'd yet to drop by for their physicals, or whose records had just arrived from other parts of the Fleet. He turned to the door as it opened and cocked his head to the side curiously.

"You allright, Lieutenant?" he asked, noticing him cradling his arms.

"Er, kinda." Dylan looked around briefly for the source of the voice. Once his eyes feel upon the Doctor he was mildly surprised to see such a developed character in years of greyness. Perhaps he was so startled by the appearance of the Doctor due to the fact the last doctor he had met they shared more then just medical jargon but a night to two.

Blake shook his head to clear his head. "I was a little careless," he indicated to his injured arm.

"Have a seat." Fox said, clearing the bed and pulling a tricorder from his coat. "Care to share what exactly you did?" he asked, flipping the scanner node out of its cradle and catching it as it fell with his right hand before deftly spinning it in is fingers and starting his scan.

Blake watched the nimble fingers of the Doc for a second as they worked the scanner into a more comfortable grip. He shook himself mentally recalling the older gent had asked him a question.

"It was adjusting power relays. I wasn't happy with the job the fitting team had done. I knew it was only going to be quick so I didn't isolate them.... I suppose this serves me right," he moved his charred fingers slightly wincing as he did.

"Safety first, Lieutenant." Fox replied, flipping the tricorder closed and smiling at him. "Nothing a bit of regeneration won't fix, I'm sure your pride is wounded a bit more than your skin." he added with a smirk.

Fox turned away and walked across the sick bay, gathering some tools from another tray and called back to him over his shoulder. "Been on the Archi long?" he asked, gathering the last of what he needed and returning to the bio bed, setting them down beside Blake.

Looking around the ward to distract himself while the Doctor began the treatment Dylan willed himself not to look feeling a little queasy at sight of the raw burns.
"No, not very long. I came aboard while the Archimedes was in dock. Assistant chief engineer Dylan Blake. Seems I've made an impression already I've ticked off lieutenant O'Connell and ended up here."

"Yes, well, Engineer's usually don't shoreleave well." Fox replied, slowly tending the burns on the Lieutenant. "Usually trying to fix everything the Captain didn't give them time to fix before. I'm sure he'll come around soon enough." he smiled. "Where were you before?" he asked.

"You know us too well. Dylan smiled halfheartedly at the Doc's comment. "Before here I was on the USS Thorn, a tiny thing, beat up and rusted to hell yet she still flew and could hold her own in a scrape. The Captain was a funny character only had one eye and refused blankly every time for a replacement. Said it served as reminded to everyone that of what they had lost." Blake shrugged. "As strange as he was he knew his stuff and the Thorn like no other."

"There's not enough of us salty dogs around anymore." Fox replied, "We're a dying breed." he added, moving his tool in firm yet gentle strokes healing the skin. It was almost like being an artist. Too swift and the skin would stretch. Too slow and it wouldn't look right. It required an even hand, and it was something that Cailean was very good at.

"There." he said, stepping away and surveying what had been damaged. "Looks good as new. Feel any tightness or pain?" he asked.

Twisting the once scolded appendage Dylan had to commend the man's handiwork, for you would have never guessed it had been burned with sores and blisters.
He flexed his fingers experimentally. "No, feels fine. Thanks Doc,"

"Enjoy then." Fox replied, "Come back if you feel anything out of the ordinary with it." he smiled.

Swinging himself off the bed Blake returned the smile. "I'll be more careful from now on, promise." he offered a hurt look backed up by a cheeky smile and left the Doc to complete his studies.
