John entered his quarters and tossed his bags on his new bed. He looked around seeing the bland textures of the walls with no life to them. They were similar to what he had at the Academy and he thought to himself Well, this will not do. Got to make this place more homelike.
He unpacked his bags and put a few things from home on the shelves. It’s a start, he thought. As he stood there looking over everything he figured it was time to report to his new Commanding Officer. He stepped out of his quarters and headed for the turbo lift. The doors to the lift swished open he stepped in and said “Bridge�. The lift swiftly headed to the destination he requested. As it was humming along he thought, I wonder what Captain Kerr is gonna be like.
Just as quickly as it started the lift came to a sudden halt. The doors once again swished open and he stepped a foot on the bridge. He looked around as he headed for the Captain’s ready room, he saw other officers at their duty stations. As he approached the door he tapped the panel beside it and waited for him to respond.
Sitting in Utopia Fleet Yards was almost as droll as sitting up in orbit of Citadel Prime. The days seemed to merge into one another, repair request after repair quest flooding through his office. Anything was better than filing yet another report. As the chime sounded, Kerr looked up and bade entry. “Come in,� he said, smiling.
The new officer stepped through, padd in hand, and presented it to the Captain. Reading it, the Trill looked up at the Ensign and his face warmed. “Ensign,� he said, “welcome to the Archimedes.
As John’s posture loosened a bit he replied to the Captain “Thank you sir. I’m excited to be here and ready to do my part for the ship, Captain� He stated, still a little bit nervous he tried not to sound like a nerdy young Ensign.
“Then that’s all I ask of you at this stage,� the Trill replied, smiling warmly to set the ensign at ease. “Please, please… Take a seat. How have you found your journey to us or were you situated locally?�
John sat down in the seat and focused his attention back towards the Captain. He drew in a deep breath and said, “Well, Sir, my journey wasn’t that all exciting. Coming from Mars Colony was pretty much the same dull trip as it was when I left for the Academy the only difference is now I have a better appreciation for the vastness of space.� John fidgeted in his chair a bit as he went over his remark knowing that first impressions where lasting ones and he didn’t want this one to show how shy and slightly uncomfortable he got doing solo interactions.
“It is rather large, yes,� the Trill replied with a chuckle. “Trust me. I don’t even know where home is anymore. In fact, I find that this little sardine can is what I call home lately.�
Kerr interlaced his fingers on the top of his desk and attempted to warm his features as he could see the nervous energy coursing through the ensign. “Fresh face in space,� he said, an easy air to his tone. “You’ll find your feet, Ensign, once we get going.�
John straightened his posture a bit in his seat “I’m sure you’re right, Sir,� he replied. “I’m sure that whatever is out there that’s yet to be explored will be quite intriguing.� he stated.
“Well,� the Trill said, a smile on his lips, “that’s what we’re here to do. To explore and find it intriguing!�
John’s face lit up and he threw out a smile as he responded to the Captain’s comment “I can’t wait, Sir.� John then shifted his smile to a slightly more professional look and stated to the Trill “Well Captain with all do respect, I still need to unpack my gear and get ready to report to Lieutenant Sheedy if you don’t have anything else for me.�
“You’re dismissed, Ensign,� Kerr replied, genuinely pleased with his enthusiasm. “I’m sure the Lieutenant is eager to meet you.�
