Mission:
Shoreleave - Welcoming Old Friends and New
Location: Apartment of Shalie Montgomery, San Fransisco, Earth
Timeline: Current
Shalie stepped out of the steamy shower into the tiny grey bathroom. The sharp contrast between the stark white towel and her emerald skin was the only color that she would allow in the dismal apartment. It wasn’t that she had any ill feelings toward the place or towards Earth in general, it was merely not her home. She didn’t have a home.
Her black hair hung wet and straight around her shoulders as she rummaged though her closet. She wasn’t looking for anything in particular just something to wear. She came across a sweat shirt in a heap at the very bottom of her closet. Shalie laughed as she tossed the sweat shirt on the bed. He is a world away…and yet I can’t get away from Drew O’Connell.
In the grand scheme of things this encounter with Drew was no different then any of the others. She would get over it with a little sleep or some diversion. Always stating that it was the last time. The last time she would let him use her. The last time she would let him humiliate her or belittle her. But she knew it wasn’t. They always ended up in the same place, the hazards of being on such a small ship.
Finally deciding on a simple t-shirt and shorts Shalie moved into her living room with book in hand. The one thing she kept here was her collection of paper books. If something was going to happen to any ship she was on, she wasn’t going to risk the few actual books that existed. Just as she settled onto the couch, her LCARS beeped announcing the arrival of a message.
Shalie tapped on the screen and to her surprise it was Shannon Montgomery. “Hi Shalie, it is mo…Shannon…I do not know if you will receive this since I know you are rarely in the Terran sector, but we are going to be docked at the ship yards, and we would love to see you….If you get this just send a message and we will send a shuttle for you…the transporters haven’t worked right since you left. Shalie touched the screen as her mom spoke it had been over ten years since she had seen her last and it was about time for a message. She quickly sent a reply and rushed to pack some clothes.
[Later]
Shalie stepped off the shuttle to find Shannon and Jame standing on the other side of the air lock. Her mother as always was happy to see her, you could tell by her bouncing in place. Jame however, just looked bored. It was something Shalie was used to, yet one of the reasons she left in the first place. “Shalie!!...you look fabulous. Shannon exclaimed as she nearly knocked Shalie over from the force of her hug. She elbowed Jame as she passed practically dragging her daughter with her. “You must tell me everything you have been up to…I have missed you. She turned to look over her daughter once more before give Shalie yet another hug.
“Ok Ok Shannon…I will tell you… Shalie said though a laugh. “But I can’t talk when you squeeze all the air out of me. She feigned breathlessness to accent her point. “Oh my darling….I am sorry….it has just been so long. The smile on Shannon’s face could be taken as nothing other then pride. “Come with me…there is someone who would like to see you.
Shalie learned long ago that there was no arguing with Shannon. When she had something on her mind there was nothing you could do to stop her. As they rounded the corner Shalie stopped in her tracks. “Ben?!? she remarked, her eyes full of shock. “Emery… Ben stated in response as he scooped Shalie up in a hug, lifting her feet off the ground. “Wow…what the hell are you doing here?
“I should ask you the same thing. Shalie smiled up at her friend as he set her back onto floor. “I am on shore leave from Starfleet and Shannon invited me up here. She gave him another quick hug before pulling him along behind her. “Now let’s take a walk and catch up. She encountered little resistance from him as he smiled and followed suit.
“Well, I came to talk to my parents and check up on Little George. Ben smiled adoringly at Shalie. She could sense that he was hiding something, and she was going to enjoy getting it from him. “Can you believe that Little George is twenty-five?
“God…I feel old. Shalie said in mock disgust. Little George had been eight or nine when she left for the academy. Being Ben’s little brother she had grown quite fond of the little guy. It was then that she sensed it. She turned to Ben quickly. “You are in love!!!
Ben face turned to shock for a split second and then hung is head. “I hate that you can do that. He kept his eyes on the floor. Shalie reached out and gently touched his chin, lifting his head. She didn’t say anything merely waiting for him to answer the question she didn’t have to ask. “She is the Captain’s daughter on the Horacio…and Emery….she is amazing…she is almost as good at fixing that ship as you…and for some reason she picked me. He paused, waiting for Shalie to respond.
“Oh Ben…I am so excited for you…. Shalie replied genuinely hugging her friend. “Granted…I feel bad for her… She replied playfully. She squealed as Ben easily lifted her up onto his shoulder and spun her carefully in the corridor. The duo laughed as he set her down. He gently touched her chin. “You will always be my Emerald.
