Mission:
Shoreleave - Welcoming Old Friends and New
Location: Engineering
Timeline: Current
ON:
Being incarcerated as he had been, both in the brig and then in sickbay, Kerr found the following few days docked at the Utopia Planetia Fleet Yards emotionally trying. He had noticed that for hours at a time he would wander the short corridors of the Nova class vessel and snake his way through her underbelly re-familiarising himself with his ship. As he stepped up to the main doors of Engineering, he thought it high time to stop in on his resident Chief Engineer and see how she was feeling about the short spell of Shoreleave having been granted, and wondered why she had still remained onboard.
Skanda looked back over her shoulder as the doors swished open. Most of her staff were off on leave already or in their quarters getting ready for it, so it was very quiet. She offered one of her rare smiles to the Captain. "H'llo, Cap'n Kerr, how 're you t'day, sir?"
Looking upon her olive face, the Trill smiled as he was warmed by the familiarity and comfort she afforded him.
“Better, thank you, Chief, he replied, looking upon her a changed man for the first time. “It’s nice to see you, Lieutenant. However, I have been wondering why you haven’t left for some time off? The Fleet Yard staff can take over and run the repairs. I know how you Chiefs don’t like giving up your responsibilities of Engineering, but, don’t make me order you to take some time off, Skanda.
"Mmmm," she hummed thoughtfully, rubbing a hand fondly over the engineering console in front of her. "I'm goin', I'm goin', I w's jus' double-checkin' s'me stuff." She turned around and leaned on the console. "B'lieve me, y' don' 'ave t' order' me a vacati'n. I'm goin' t' go visi' two o' m' siste's." She nodded at Kerr. "What abou' you, sir? What're y' goin' t' do with y' leave, now tha' y're..." She waved a hand at him vaguely. Sheedy wasn't sure how questions about Trill joinings were asked, or even if it was kosher to ask. But she did wonder.
“Joined? he replied with a smile. “Well, Skanda, I think I’m going to take some time out and... readjust. He sighed with an unusual glint in his eye. A glint that betrayed his contentment and new found years of wisdom. “It’s strange, you know? But, fantastical. He returned his attention back to his Chief Engineer and grinned. “Sisters? And where are they, Skanda? You’ve still got a few weeks before you need to report back.
"I'm 'appy for y'," she said sincerely. Skanda didn't understand Trill much, but from what she knew she could guess that joining was an amazing and unique experience. To the question about her sisters, she replied, "Surya 'n' Shiva both serve 'n th' Flee', b't thei' ships were dec'mmissi'ned. S' they're plane'-side, San Fr'ncisco, wai'in' f'r a new postin'." She frowned suddenly. "Or th' were in Frisco las' time I checked. Mayb' I sh'd call, huh?"
“Might be a prudent measure, Chief, he replied, squinting his eyes at her. “Well, I’ll leave you to finish up so that you can get off out, Chief. Don’t forget, I’m here should you need me. He nodded at her and smiled. “Don’t work too hard, remember. I’d rather not have to order you!
