622 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: The Shining Truth
Location: Lane's Quarters
Timeline: Current

ON:

As the doors to the brig shut closed tight behind Commander Arkham, Lane looked again quickly to the open vent and pondered. Stay or go? The thought flashed in his mind like a lightening bolt. GO!

He hoisted himself up fluidly to the darkness that extended beyond his own vision and clambered his way down the crawl space. Mapping out his own ship in his mind, he took the appropriate turns and ascended through the decks. Once on Deck 2, he shuffled silently around the corner until he came to his own quarters.

As he panickedly stood before the sealed doors of his own room, he felt his beating heart quicken and the feeling of dread well deep from within his belly. Why would she tell me to come here only not to give me access? he thought, shooting looks up and down the corridor, anticipating his own discovery momentarily. She wouldn’t.

“Computer, open Lane’s quarters, authorisation: Lane-Pi-Alpha-7.

The successive beeps that then ensued confused the Trill. Something was happening but whatever it was, it wasn’t standard. The doors slid open as he stepped in and the sealed and locked behind him. Mrs. Gray was the first to openly gasp at his appearance as Catherine stepped forward.

Dr. Halsey looked the Captain over once. It was a shock to see him out of the brig, but at least Rowena had assured that the man would remain unharmed while things transpired, and it seemed she'd been good to her word. Looking for words but finding none, she choked out the only word that immediately came to mind, "How?"

“Arkham, Catherine, he spluttered from shear exhaustion. He fell slightly and gripped a hold of the chair that was positioned by the door, supporting himself with it. “I… don’t know what’s going on, but she let me out. We have to seize this opportunity, but I’m not sure if the Commander will help us any further. Have you spoken with her at all?

Mrs. Gray quickly stooped to help Lane sit in the chair to relax. “Catherine, she said, turning to face her, her own face creased with worry and angst. “Is there anything you can do?

Catherine shook her head. "All I've known is that she had some kind of plan. Arkham...has never included me in any of it. Thought I was safer that way. I haven't seen her since she confined us to quarters, that was the last time we spoke. All she said was that she wanted to spare your daughter the sight of..." -- Catherine trailed off -- "The way things are going right now, I can't decide if she's plotting mutiny or murder."

“Murder? Lane angrily questioned. “Murder? How? Who? His mind suddenly spun again as the wave of fear struck him. A grave expression fell on his features and he took in a deep breath to calm himself. Mrs. Gray, again, put her hand on his shoulder to steady him and felt him tremble. “I… I don’t know what to do. If I leave these quarters, Harwood will have me returned to brig. We… we have to… trust the Commander. She’s helped me this far. She must have a plan. I’m trapped here and that is something she knows.

He flicked his eyes to Catherine and breathed quickly. “Catherine. You need to contact her. I can’t. You need to find out what she has planned. How we can work together to get this ship back and override Harwood.
