459 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Behind the Mask of Familiarity
Location: Starbase 375
Timeline: unknown

“So, they’re shipping you off, are they?

Vaxx looked at the Bolian. Argis was a competitor of sorts, and the two developed a mutual respect for each other while they both resided on Starbase 375. “Yes, new places, new opportunities, new customers, new responsibility. Vaxx fiddled with 2 different inventory PADDs while sitting at the table of the local Starbase Bar. “I still hold my offer for you of my customer list for chocolate, 1 Bar of Latinum. If you won’t take it, I’ll put it up for auction on the local ‘net. I expect it will go for more than that.

“No, chocolate is not my thing. So, why did you bring me here?

“I propose a trade agreement. Very lucrative for you. Since you have no Starfleet attachments, I will have need for someone in the commercial sector. Instead of rivals, we can be business partners.

“Really. Argis was already wary. “What kind of margins are you willing to accept, seeing as how far you’ll be from here? Obsidian Fleet is far away. It will take some doing to get things to you.

“Standard 15%.

Argis chuckled. “Sorry, 15% isn’t worth my time. Let’s say 25%.

Vaxx already knew, even at 25%, it was viable. But profit was profit. “For you, I could swing 17%.

“Make it 20% and I’m your connection.

“Only 18%, or I go find the Skandi Sisters.

“You wouldn’t! Vaxx gave that mischievous look and grin. “Alright, 18%. Argis tapped the PADD to accept the agreement. “See you around, until I don’t.

After Argis departed, Vaxx continued to shuffle his inventory around. He obtained the Nova’s latest supply reports and began his assessments. He estimated they were at least a few months out of date, but knowing how Starfleet inventory models and projections worked, he got a pretty good idea what they needed to fill up. He also made some connections in the Engineering department for the Nova schematics, and the Archimedes specifically. Space was at a premium there. It reminded him of the submarines of Old Earth History. No wasted space. He calculated what inventory he could take from the Starbase and shuffle into the supplies he was going to bring to restock the Archimedes. He evaluated and sorted his best items, his bait items, and the low margin items. It was going to be tough to find the right ratio. His commbadge beeped.

“This is Petty Officer Vaxx. He liked the way that sounded.

=/\= You have a private communication. A Captain Fitzhugh of the SS Tracer. =/\=

“Excellent, can you send it to my portable terminal?

=/\= Certainly. =/\=

A face of an older human with graying hair and beard appeared. “Are ye Vaxx?

“Yes captain, so nice to meet you. Shall we talk business?
