Trill to Trill

Posted on Tue Aug 4th, 2009 @ 10:17pm by Captain Elsie Halliwell

404 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Behind the Mask of Familiarity
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: Current

ON:

Captain Lane stood outside of sickbay and halted before entering, allowing a heavy sigh to leave his shattered frame before continuing. He knew that the prognosis for Kerr was bad – Hell, it was terminal – but the Trill knew that he had to face the dying visage of his predecessor while he still had the chance to. It wasn’t going to be pleasant, and Lane knew that Kerr would probably not even be conscious enough to converse, but he at least had to be present before the end and the shadows took him.

As he stepped into the sickbay, the familiar face of Doctors Mabren and Elde appeared as the doors silently sealed behind him.

“Doctors, he said, his voice think and weary, “how is he?

Closing his tricorder, Mabren looked up at the newest member to visit sickbay. Glancing over at Doctor Elde, he answered, "Not well, his deterioration has increased. I'm afraid it won't be much longer."

“That’s what I feared, Lane replied after a breath. “And there’s nothing that can be done for him? He’s at least comfortable, isn’t he?

Lane could never be described as a heartless man. In fact, he believed that that is what set him aside from the other Commanding Officers of the Fleet. He knew that, when the time warranted, he could pull the mask of Command out from underneath his desk and discipline and direct orders like the best of them. But, he wanted his ship run far removed from the soulless Captain, unapproachable and aloof ideal that most officers had come to expect. However, as the death of his friend drew closer to eventuality, he found himself concerned more with the prospect of joining than loss.

Taking a breath, Mabren always found this part of his job the hardest; it was never easy to lose someone. "No, I'm afraid not, the Prophets," he stopped himself, casting a glance between the two Trill. Not everyone had his faith. Looking back at the Captain, he continued, "Yes, he is. Well, as comfortable as we can make him considering his deterioration."

“Thank you, Doctors, he replied, nodding solemnly. “Inform me of any change, if you would.

With that, Lane turned slowly and left the sickbay, the sole tear rolling from the edge of his eye down his cheek.
