438 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Behind the Mask of Familiarity
Location: The brig
Timeline: 64180.89

ON:

The doors opened with their usual swishing sound and Lucy looked up to try to see the person who entered. Except she couldn't because of the angle she was lying on her bench. She could just about hear talking between a man and woman. She leant further over the edge of the bunk, balancing on her ribs to listen and just as the woman laughed a high, rippling laugh, she lost her balance and fell onto the floor.

Quickly she pushed herself to her feet and found Maria Traho looking in at her. Maria had her hands on her hips, her long brown hair casually flicked over so that it was only hanging on one side. In the background, Lucy could see Martin, the guard, slyly eyeing up Maria's perfect figure and pretending to tap something into his console.

"Hi, Luce!" said Maria, far too chirpily for the circumstances.

"Hello, Maria," replied Lucy "Er, thank you for coming to see me."

"That's fine," said Maria, suddenly serious and examining a hang nail in front of her face. "Your hair looks very greasy."

Lucy laughed with embarrassment. "Yeah well they don't let you shower at will in here," she said.

"Oh well, I suppose you are going to be here a long time then," said Maria, finishing with the hang nail and sitting casually on the edge of the other console. "How are you?"

"Not too great, but at least I am warm and dry," said Lucy smiling. "Have you heard anything about when they will let me out?" she asked hopefully.

Maria had gone back to her hang nail and looked up only when Lucy had finished speaking. "Er, no. Sorry. Thing is, Luce, seeing as you are in here and I know that's awful, but could I use your holodeck rations? It's not like you need them or anything and you know how bored I get!" Maria did her pouty lip thing, the stronger form of which was reserved for men. This version was specifically designed to appeal to women's better nature.

Lucy was amazed at Maria's callousness but then reminded herself that was what she had always been like. It was merely a personality trait like any other. She sighed. "Yes I suppose so..."

She had not even had time to complete the sentence, before Maria was out of the door with a backwards "thanks, Luce" and a pat on the arm of the guard, ho watched her approvingly as she flew past.

Lucy sighed again and sat back down. It was going to be a long wait.
