Mission:
Behind the Mask of Familiarity
Location: Captain's Ready Room
Timeline: Current
ON:
Shalie had practically stepped off the Covington and on to the bridge. She had only made a few detours to drop off her belonging in her quarters before heading to locate her new CO. The sooner her transfer orders were approved the sooner she could begin setting up her department. It seemed like it was just yesterday that she got the Operations Department on the Rook finely tuned.
As Shalie approached the door she reached out and tapped the chime to announce the arrival. While she waiting for permission to enter she glanced around the bridge. It was a good sized ship and a class she had never been on before. There would be new areas for her to explore and new systems to learn. She was open to the challenge.
As the Trill sat behind that all too familiar desk of his, the chime started him from his work. Looking up over the clutch of PADDs and the console that separated him from the room before him, he called out, “Come, as the doors neatly opened.
“Ah, Lieutenant. Come in. I’ve been expecting you.
Shalie entered the room and stood in front of the desk. "Lieutenant JG Shalie Montgomery reporting for duty, sir." She said confidently as she extended the PADD she was holding to him.
Taking the PADD from her tender grasp as he stood to his feet, Lane haplessly tapped at it, nodded and smiled. “All official now, Ms Montgomery. Welcome to the Archimedes. I trust that you you’ve made yourself at home in the short time you have been aboard.
"Yes, sir. Thank you. I have seen my quarters and the bridge and now your ready room," Shalie replied with a smile. "I plan on getting to know this ship very well over the next few days"
“Well, I am glad to hear of it, Lieutenant. Now you’ll have to organise that department that you have over-taken. Chief Warrant Jackson left some pretty bit shoes to fill, but I’m sure that you’re more than capable of that, if your service record is anything to go by. He thought for a second and sunk back into his chair, wondering how to proceed with the following line of questions.
“How are you, Lieutenant? I mean, what with your recent ordeal.
"Well they repaired my shoulder, so that shouldn't be a problem anymore." Shalie replied cooly. "Other then that just a few residual nightmares, nothing a few sessions with a counslor can't cure." She hoped she didn't seem as callous as that sounded. "Thank you for the concern sir, but I assure you I am fit for duty."
“I am not worried about your capability on the job, Lieutenant. You come to us highly recommended and I am sure that this little episode won’t hinder you. But, I am concerned more about your wellbeing.
Lane decided he did not want to discuss the situation of Lieutenant Carter rattling around the brig with Lieutenant Montgomery for the sole reason that he wanted to contain the information from as many people as possible. She was such a small ship, and the Trill was losing time as it was with the absence of Lucy from her office. However, with the instruction to Jackson about keeping the long range sub-space comm. relays offline, he had to bring the new crewmember into the fold and his confidence.
“I have to admit to you, Lieutenant, he began after a pause and a sigh, “we have a situation onboard that, if I’m honest, is not the best circumstance for you to come onboard to. But, your reassignment orders were issued before all of this and I have had to think on my feet a little. Since you are a member of the senior staff now, you should know what is happening. My Assistant Chief Sec/Tac officer was found dead in a Jeffries tube two days ago. One crewmember is in the brig for her own safety and I have had to ask your predecessor, Chief Warrant Jackson, to disable the communications array citing a malfunction for the cause. I deem this an internal matter for the time being and once Command is contacted my crewmember will be removed and we will labelled as inactive until they can establish the facts. I need you to continue Jackson’s work until I tell you otherwise. Is that clear?
"Yes, sir." Shalie responded. "Crystal..." She paused, debating on whether to continue. "Respectfully sir, I have one request. I know I am new to your ship and that in this type of situation you may not know where my loyalties lie. The moment my orders came in my loyalties fell to your and your crew. I would appreciate that you continue to keep me in the loop, at least in regards to operations."
“I hadn’t planned it any other way, Lieutenant. As I said, you’re now one of my senior staff and I need to be able to rely on you. I doubt that you’ll disappoint me. I advise that you check on team and then report back to me when you have everything in order. If there’s anything you need, then come and see me. I’ll arrange what you want.
"Thank you sir." Shalie replied. "I have a slightly unorthadox manner of running ops, but I would be glad to report back when I have everything up and running....Other than the communications array is there anything I should be aware of?"
“Your staff will inform you of a virus that contaminated the gel-pack system. But, the Doctor and Lieutenant Larkin, our Chief Science Officer, devised a radiation pulse system that has treated the infection. We are still experiencing minor system failures, but they are returning to normal. You shouldn’t see any ill effects. But, it might be prudent of you to get into those systems yourself and have a poke around with a fresh pair of eyes.
Shalie nodded in acknowledgement. "Thank you for the information, sir...I will get right on that." She paused for a moment before continuing. "Sir, if there isn't anything else, I am dying to get myself more familiar with this ship....I have never worked on a Nova before."
“You’re dismissed, Lieutenant, Lane replied with a smile at her eagerness. “I suggest a trip to the Arboretum down on Deck 4 and then, when you do have that elusive time off they promise you, try the Offiicers’ Lounge, the Golden Crown, just on Deck 2. You might see some of the other staff there, too. And remember, Lieutenant, if you need me for anything, my door is always open.
"Thank you sir." With that Shalie turned and headed out towards the bridge. She was eager to start her new position on a new ship. The puzzle was Shalie's favorite part of her job. Learning what makes things tick, so to speak. She and Archimedes were going to be good friends by the time her stay was over.
