Mission:
Behind the Mask of Familiarity
Location: Guest Quarters
Timeline: Current
OOC: Do to a misunderstanding at the time, this was posted before it needed to.
OLD:
Tapping his commbadge, "Doctor Mabren to Doctor Elde, could you meet me at Mr. Kerr's quarters?"
NEW:
Elde placed the cup of tea down, next to the padd that she was working from, onto the table in front of her. She inwardly sighed and closed her eyes in contained frustration. The glint of the golden Starfleet emblem that was fasted to her chest caught her eye and she flicked at it awkwardly. I hate these blasted things, she thought to herself. Contactable wherever, whenever…
"Elde here, Doctor. I'll see you down there momentarily."
She recycled her cup, collected the padd and then proceeded to make her way to Kerr's quarters.
"Understood," Mabren said, before he tapped his comm badge and closed the channel. Getting up from his desk he walked out of sickbay and towards the lift. Pressing the call button, he waited for the lift to arrive. When the doors parted, he stepped in and called out, "Deck two, VIP quarters."
As the lift resumed its upward journey, the other member, a full Lieutenant asked, "Are you alright, Doctor?"
Looking over, Mabren answered, "No, ma'am. Sleep hasn't been easy. And now, it's a luxury."
"Well," she said, "Technically, I could order you to get rest. But position wise, I'm sure you would override that order."
Mabren let out a short laugh at that. "A bit, but I'll try to get some sleep. Right now, I need to focus all my energies on the gel packs."
"Understood," the Lieutenant responded, "But we can't have you collapse from exhaustion."
"I know," he said, as the lift slowed to a stop, "I'll try to get some sleep." As the doors parted, he gestured for the Lieutenant to go first. With a smile and nod, the senior officer stepped out and headed down the corridor. Walking into the corridor, he looked around and realized he didn't know which was Kerr's quarters.
"Computer," he said, "guest quarters three." On the wall display across from him, the ship's schematic changed to the deck plan and showed the route Mabren needed to walk to arrive at the quarters. Heading off in the indicated direction, he arrived at the right quarters. Pressing the call button, he waited for the door to open.
On the other side of the door, the elderly Trill stirred from a troubled slumber and awoke to the sound of the chime ringing in his ears. He awkwardly lifted himself from the couch where he rested and hobbled over to the door. As they parted open with a swish, Kerr looked upon his visitor and smiled.
"Doctor," he beamed. "Come in, come in…"
Looking at the frail, old Trill, Mabren couldn't help but feel like his spirits lifted. Walking into the guest quarters, he said, "Thank you, Mister Kerr."
Standing behind the Doctor was Doctor Elde, moving toward him. "Is everything all right, Mr. Mabren?" she asked.
Taking a breath, Mabren thought about his answer. Taking a seat, he took a deep breath. "No," he finally said. "Not really. As you know Doctor, we are having problems with the bio-neural gel packs that has resulted from an... infection. And in order to slow the infection we are sending a radiation pulse through the network, to help slow the spread."
Kerr and Elde looked at each other blankly. "How can we help you, then, Doctor?" Elde asked, placing down her padd on the glass table before her. She looked at him intently, and with a curious twinkle in her eye.
"Well," Mabren started, standing up as he reached into the pockets of his smock and found only the vials with the inoculation. "Crap," he said, before turning and walking over to the replicator. He typed in a quick stream of commands and after a quick brief whirr, a hypospray appeared in the bay. Reaching in, he grabbed the hypo out of the bay. "Another," he called out, and another one appeared. Grabbing it, he dropped it into the left pocket of his smock.
"I thought this was a little light," he said, walking back over, grabbing one of the vials, he placed it into the hypospray and held it up. "Just a simple inoculation. The radiation is at a low dosage, but considering...." Mabren paused before he continued, trying to think of the proper way to phrase what he needed to say.
"Thank you," Doctor Elde said as she held out her hand. "Can I ask you, though, Doctor, is the entire crew receiving these inoculations or just us? Do you think that our… joined nature is somewhat of a hazard concerning the radiation treatment.
"No," he answered, "We're preparing a series of inoculations for the whole crew. But considering your," he glanced at Kerr and then back to Elde, "Conditions, I figured it would be best to start you two early."
"Thank you, Doctor," she replied.
"Right," he said, handing the hypospray over to Doctor Elde. "One shot every twenty four hours should be more than enough. But I'll leave those details to your physician, Mister Kerr."
Kerr held a hand up and waved a wordless thanks to the man stood before him. Nodding, he smiled.
"I'll see to it that he is administered, Mr. Mabren. And thank you."
"Your welcome," Mabren said, returning the smile, "If there are any problems, Sickbay is at your disposal."
"Again, I thank you, Mr. Mabren."
