Her steps towards the turbolift were quick but heavy, as if she had a sense of purpose. Well she had. Carter stepped into the lift and said "deck 2". She stared ahead, nervous of the next hour of her life. Nervous of what she might find out.

The turbolift whined to a halt and she got out and strode to the holodeck. As requested, the EMH was in there already.

"I took the liberty of starting our favourite programme..." he began, the pub background flickering with reflected firelight behind him.

"Computer" said Carter "end programme and begin programme Sickbay One".

The room fizzled around them. The warmth of the public house disappeared and a perfect reproduction of Sickbay appeared in its place, the colder lighting making Carter blink.

"Charming!" said the EMH "perhaps you'd like to change my clothing as well without asking me?"

"Sorry" said Carter. "I have something very important I need to you to help me with and we can't go to the real sickbay."

The EMH rolled his holographic eyes and said "if I didn't know you better, Ensign Carter, I would say you were up to no good".

Lucy smiled at that and went over to the viewing monitor. She tapped in a few commands and entered and access code. "There, doctor," she announced. "My DNA".

"Congratulations, Ensign. Go to the top of the class" said the EMH. He looked more closely, peering over her shoulder and said "What are you doing? How did you get access to this?" He almost shouted the last sentence as he realised she had accessed information beyond her security codes.

"Let's just say... a friend helped me." Carter was smiling now as she looked at first the EMH then the viewscreen. "All right, now doctor, let's get down to business."

A shadow of concern crossed the EMH's face but he soon looked normal again. "Well, I suppose that if you have accessed this far then you are allowed to know everything I know."

"Please, doctor, tell me everything." Lucy sat on the edge of a biobed and prepared herself for the worst. This was going to change her life.
