Mission:
Wolves in Sheep's Clothing
Location: Ensign Carter's quarters/Commander Lane's ...
Timeline: 63888.12
ON:
Ensign Lucy Carter walked back from her meeting with the holgraphic doctor in her imaginary pub setting in excellent spirits. The shocking event in the past week on the planet surface was behind her and she realised she was smiling a great, open mouthed childish smile. The doctor had told her that her DNA issue had happened to her in her life - she had not been born with it. That meant she had a starting point. Something had happened to her and she intended to find out what.
She reached her quarters still smiling, tapped her code on the door panel and went in. Her muscles were aching from the extensive physical workouts she had arranged for herself during the past week and her endorphin levels had been tested to the max.
She sat at her desk and thought. She needed an approach to determining the reason behind the mysterious issue of her hidden DNA. Official channels had failed - there was some sort of secrecy surrounding her medical condition - if that's what it could be called.
No, a logical method had to be employed.
"Computer, display personal record for Ensign Lucy Carter" she asked.
The computer scrolled up all the usual data - her Starfleet academy training, her personal logs, her school reports and her welfare at the children's home. But it stopped as it reached the point just after her second birthday. Carter frowned. "Computer, display ALL records for Ensign Lucy Carter from birth."
"Unable to comply" said the familiar and now strangely annoying voice.
"Why?" asked Lucy.
The computer merely stated the information was classified.
"Who has classified the information?" asked Lucy, remaining calm.
"That information is classified" replied the computer.
Lucy stood and went over to the replicator. "Tea. Milk no sugar" she requested and the cup fizzled out of thin air. She took the cup and sat on the edge of her bed, tapping the china cup and thinking.
Finally, she pressed her combadge and stated "Ensign Carter to Commander Lane."
Lane was sat in his quarters, wrapped in a towel and sopping wet. He had just got out of the water-shower having just washed away the day. The intercom sounded throughout his room and he had not spoken with the chief counsellor since her return. It was a pleasure to hear her voice. Tapping his combadge in reply, he said, "Lane here, Ensign. What can I do for you?"
"Sir, I beg your pardon for disturbing you. I am doing some research on the children's home I grew up in and have hit a brick wall. I thought that under the Federation's Data Protection Act of 2380, all information of public institutions was available to an individual if that data related to them. However, I find that information relating to me before I was 2 has been classified. Would you happen to know why, sir?"
The pleasant feeling on hearing her initial hail quickly subsided. He looked off to the side of the room and narrowed his eyes in irritation. "Ensign, I have asked you nicely to cease labouring this point, out of respect for your own feelings. Until I receive orders otherwise, I am afraid I am under strict instruction not to discuss the matter with you. Now, please… stop this, Lucy."
Carter was quiet for a moment as she processed this dismissal. "All right, then sir, I will leave it," she said softly, crossing her fingers in front of her and actually meaning that she would stop questioning him. Of course she would carry on digging. She just had to think of a legitimate method.
