ON:
Adriana carefully, oh so carefully, settled Anthony down in his crib. She had just gotten him to go to sleep- though she didn’t think she really had much to do with it, he’d probably just exhausted himself with crying. She was never able to settle him when he had a really bad colic attack, so she doubted she’d done it this time.
She backed out of the room and turned on the baby-monitor as the door slid shut, then ran to the comm-screen and dialed Earth.
“Mams!” she practically shouted as soon as the call was picked up on the other end.
“Adriana! Thank God, we were worried sick, is everyone alright? Morai, Anthony? What happened?” Adriana’s mother almost shouted back. She then turned over her shoulder and shouted for real, “It’s Adriana! She’s alright!” She turned back to the screen. “Are you alright?” she asked again.
Adriana nodded, blinking back tears. “We’re alright, Mams. We’re all ok. I promise.”
Elinor Joz brushed a lock of her silvering blonde hair out of her face and drank in the sight of her oldest daughter for a moment. “Oh honey. When can I come see you? I can be on the first shuttle off Earth,” she offered.
Adriana smiled. “I’ll let you know. As soon as we’re close enough to meet you. You haven’t gotten to hold Anthony yet.”
Mams grinned. “Don’t think I’ve forgotten that. He is my most recent grandson, it’s about time I started spoiling him.”
“Any time, Mams. The sooner the better.”
From the next room, Anthony started to cry and Adriana’s shoulders dropped a little. “Speaking of… The young master calls. I love you, Mams. I’ll call again, as soon as I can. We’re all alright, I promise. I just had to call and tell you- I couldn’t just send a message.” She stood and blew her mother a kiss. “Tell Da and everyone else I love them, and that we’re alright. I’ll see you soon, Mams.”
“Kisses for your big and little men, I love you, sweetheart,” Mams got out before Adriana rushed off to scoop up her little man. As Mams reached to end the call, she couldn’t help but shake her head. She remembered those days, at the beck and call of an infant….
In the next room, a tiny granddaughter began to cry and Mams laughed as she too went to comfort and cuddle.
