595 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Ripples
Location: Captain's Ready Room
Timeline: After Coming Around From Intoxication

ON:

Still a little disoriented after leaving sickbay, Doctor Butler thought the medicine made him hundred percent better and the side effects, small but not bothersome, appeared after he left too early from resting to heal. He stopped to place a hand on the wall of the corridor to help establish his dizziness for a minute.

He stood up straight when a few crewmembers were giving him strange glances as they were walking by. Jeff ran his hands down his pressed tunic and started walking. As soon as he entered the turbolift, he called out for the bridge. The humming sound soothed his mild anxiety, another side effect of the drink that hasn't been fully treated, yet.

He entered a busy area of the bridge and stood for a minute to watch the normal commotion of crewmembers bustling about from the station or blurting out orders. Seeing the viewscreen, he was mesmerized by the speed of stars as they were on warp drive. The rest of the ship appeared to feel smooth as if they were not moving at all. His eyes found the Captain's chair and it was occupied by the Vulcan half-breed of Human female. The doctor took several breaths, trying to relieve his anxiety that seems to be increasing because of an unfamiliar territory that is not the quietness that sickbay has always has been most of the time. The ambivalence was beginning to overwhelm him. He slightly pulled on the short collar of his tunic, feeling a sweat is about to break open.

T'mpest turned. "Can I help you, doctor?"

"I need to speak to you, privately," he said.

T'mpest nodded and stood. "In my office." She walked off the bridge and through the door to her office, turning to face the doctor. "How can I help you?"

He followed her into a small room - her ready room. After the doors closed behind him, he begin to speak. "Captain, I believe I have been targeted by someone who has tampered my holodeck program. I'm sure you've heard that I got stuck in the holodeck. Then, I was poisoned by some drink a holo-character gave me that I did not create." Jeff moved to a couch and quickly sat down. "I've been treated by an EMH and a medical tech and they both believe that I was targeted, ma'am. It must sound crazy...", he trailed off with a little confusion.

"Have you asked Engineering and Ops about who could have tampered with the holodeck program?" she asked.

"I haven't had the chance to. I came straight here from sickbay to notify you of what's going on... ears only. Just don't want anybody to hear about it and it would end up with the wrong person, ma'am. I guess I will speak to chief directly in engineering and ops," he said, standing up slowly.

She eyed him carefully. "Have you checked with medical? To make sure you're okay?"

"The EMH, it was named Emma, she treated me with some strange medications...it helped but I'm not completely out of the woods yet. I left quickly to get word to you and plan to get back to get more rest, ma'am," Jeff said.

T'mpest nodded. "Thank you for the information. Please let me know if you learn anything else regarding this situation."

"Yes, ma'am," he said, feeling tired. "I'm going to return to sickbay to get more rest." Jeff walked out and turned towards the turbolift.
