Mission: What Dreams May Come

[CONTINUED]

[OLD]

Then it happened. He heard her voice speak softly and say one word. One name. Vlad. Who was Vlad? He would think. A person from her past. He felt strangely uncomfortable, but he felt it was more her feel than his. Perhaps some she felt closely to. Orin felt it, oddly. Her last mind meld was with Vlad. A relationship? It made him think about his own brief relationship with Thy'las. Being on the training ground with her. Working with her in the gun range. Talking tactics and fighting styles. It was Thy'las that convinced him to go to Starfleet and it was Thy'las who convinced him to be at his best. She was also the one, sadly, that made him realize the best was to be the best was to stay within his own shell. To always be about the mission and to keep everyone at arms length. Orin could remember their last moment with each other. The last night they spent together before she disappeared.

[NEW]

Flashes of memory, of T'mpest and Vladimir on a planet, pretending to be husband and wife. Laughing together, embracing. And then, unanswered messages, another transfer, searches through Starfleet records, and then Vlad with another woman. The images stopped abruptly and switched to a dusty room, clearly unused for centuries, and then three holographic images with flashes of an ancient civilization in the background on a large screen. Then more images of T'mpest working on a variety of communication devices from crude devices with glass tubes to planetary systems.

The images of T'mpest and Vladimir helped Orin understand her a lot more. He couldn't help but feel sorry for what had happened. Although, it didn't stop him from unintentionally sharing his own relationship problem. An image of young Orin and Thy'las began flash between them. The two running through the course, as if competing with each other. Large smiles on their faces as the rest of the Andorian troops cheered them on. He crossed the finish line and soon images of them in bed together came through. Flashing as if unexpectedly. The two seemed to be in the heat of passion before another flash came through of a General of the camp telling Orin he wasn't fit to make it to the next series of training.

A crushing feeling came across Orin which expanded to T'mpest. It was a mixture of disappointment and anger, throwing him in between which was more tragic to him. Dropping out of the Imperial Guard training or forcing to leave Thy'las behind. The image would soon change as a flash of both Orin and Thy'las in a room, both half naked, as she spoke to him about joining Starfleet or their Marines. She seemed different, almost distant from him. In the next image, Orin was waking up and seeing she was already gone, leaving only a Dear Orin note behind. He didn't know what happened to her from there, but what he did know is she didn't make it into the Imperial Guard either. She was no lost in the void and from then on, Orin closed himself off. No longer interested in finding out what happened.

More images began to flash by. Images of Orin training in the Marines, than soon training his own set. Bringing together his team. Picking through files of the ones he thought was the best. On the screen in front of him showed profiles of DeViro, Abby, Douglas, Cross, and Blake. Soon to be, Deathstrike, Crow, Disaster-piece, Saint, and Sinner. From then one it was a happy feeling of putting thrm through the paces. Training them and testing them. Soon after being approached by a man in Starfleet Intelligence whose face was hidden in darkness.

She pushed a little to see the face of the Intel officer. She'd spent time working with Intel on her first ship, then as the head of Intel on the Ranger. She still had contacts and wondered if he was someone she knew -- or knew of.

In her curiosity she not only went deeper into his conscience, she pulled him deeper into hers and the mind meld grew more intimate. It was oddly pleasant to have him there in her mind and she let him see her years on Vulcan, trying to be the child her father wanted her to be. The years of discipline and training. Then the move to Earth and her fascination with emotions. Her mother's collection and her meetings with Romulan diplomats, the Grand Nagus, an occasional Orion. Each time, she would add another item to her collection of antiquities. Throughout the memories flashed images of communication systems. Parts scattered across a table while she worked on improving a 20th Century Terran device to doing research when she was the only one left in the lab. The young T'mpest was generally happy, but spent a great deal of her time alone.

The face of the Intel Officer remained a mystery, as the darkness from his face began to roll and suddenly the image changed. From her memories, the image of Orions stuck in his mind as she soon saw a flash of Orin and his team. The team now in a shuttle, which ran quickly through the atmosphere of a planet and Orin reviewed the plan of their attack. Everything seemed normal. Morgana standing at his side. John tinkering with a device as he looked down at the map. Jack piloting the craft as both Cross and Blake seemed to be getting ready for the assault. Orin looked up at the team, nodding just before the image shifted abruptly to an unexpected flashback.

Disruptor fire flew past his head as Orin and Morgana gave cover fire to Jack and John who were being chased by Orion troops. In John's hands was Cross, who looked in bad shape as Jack was helping a wounded unidentified officer get away. Something felt horribly wrong because as tough as Orin seemed firing his weapon the sadness of seeing Cross, and not seeing Blake, was an image he couldn't shake. As the image changed, now inside the shuttle, the team escaped through the atmosphere as Orin and Morgana struggled to treat his fatal wounds. The only thing that seemed to echo in the whole image was Cross's voice repeating "Where's Sin? Where's my brother? We need to go back." Than silence as Cross went limp on the planning table, Orin continuing to squeeze his hand as Jack broke the atmosphere and plotted a course to the rendezvous.
