Mission: What Dreams May Come
[CONTINUED]
[OLD]
Stepping out of the turbolift and onto the main floor of the bridge, it didn't take Jensen long to see why he'd been summoned. Lying on the floor not far from the back wall of the bridge was crewman Sinhta surrounded by a few others. Walking briskly forward, he pushed aside the officers and took out his tricorder to begin the preliminary scans, while the two medical ensigns worked on calming the crewmembers near Sinhta.

Jensen inquired, "What happened?" While it should have been obvious, Jensen was having just a bit of trouble concentrating due to the overwhelming fear and confusion that was washing over him like a relentless current. Though if he had to hazard a guess, the young man had died from asphyxiation.
"I was worrrking on this science station next to his," T'kaarch purred, "And all of a sudden he starrrted scrrreaming, so I looked at what is wrrrong, and then he just collapsed with his face white..." He looked quite shaken himself. "I felt no pulse when I checked," he added solemnly.
T'mpest held tightly to the back of her chair, squeezing it to alleviate her own growing concern. Yet another crewman had died on her watch. "See? You're responsible for this. You do not deserve to be a Captain," the voice hissed.
Moving away to give Jensen and his team access Blake rubbed the chill from his arms trying to shake off the memories of what just happened. The voice of the medical lieutenant standing directly ahead didn't penetrate the din as Blake shivered more violently. The darkness from Edmorn seemed to be dogging them he feared.
Listening to T'kaarch as he finished his scan of Petty Officer Sinhta, Jensen was about to respond with what his initial scan produced, but something about the data concerning the scan had the hair on the back of his neck rising. Motioning for Sito and Collins, he said, "Take Petty Officer Sinhta's body to Sickbay. Have Doctor Quinn preform a neurological scan." Noting the looks on the two officers' faces, he said, "Don't question it, you know why, just go."
Rylie couldn't help but pick up the surface thoughts of everyone on the bridge, especially those of the medical team. They knew something, or at the very least suspected something about the situation and the cause. Pressing to get answers that they needed to know, she questioned Jensen aloud, "What is it, doctor, what do you know?"
As the two medical staff dematerialised with the body of Petty Officer Sinhta, Jensen took a breath, uneasy at the number of personnel around him, especially for a conversation like this. "I'd rather not say, commander, not until we have some definitive answers."
Quieter, so that only the assembled few could hear, Cattmor prompted more, "Lieutenant, if this is related to any other findings... you have to tell us something."
Jensen glanced around at the few officer who could hear him, T'mpest, Cattmor, T'kaarch and Blake, and visibly swallowed in an attempt to compose himself from feeling what everyone else was feeling, and giving some bad news. "Since entering the cloud, the medical staff been noticing some patterns, among the crew. They've also performed some brain scans of the two people we have in comas down in sickbay, and have stumbled across some disturbing parallels." He paused a second, not quite sure what to let on to next. Truth was, they'd been correlating the results for a number of hours.
"Go on." Cattmor said.
"I don't know how or why, but we've detected minute traces of a neurogenic field masking over the EM patterns of each subjects brain waves. I remember reading about a similar situation on the starship Voyager, but with us, it's almost having a direct opposite effect. The scan I performed on Mister Sinhta, showed an overload of neurogenic particles in the Limbic system in the brain, the emotion center, among other anomalies. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to detect anything, or determine any stimuli which could be affecting the crew in this way." Turning toward Commander Michaels, he went on, "I swear I was going to report all this within the hour, commander."
Dylan wanted to snort at how ridicules this sounded but find he couldn't quite manage it, likewise he could bring a witty quick reply forward either.
"So what now, Lieutenant? You have two people in comas and one dead." Rylie said, her tone a little more cutting than she were intending, the emotion level on the bridge climbing several degrees, and she knew for a fact Jensen could feel it too.
Jensen closed his eyes momentarily, and clenched his fist, distracting himself from acting out on the emotions he was sensing from those around him before responding, "I need to get down to sickbay and perform an autopsy to find what or who seemingly scared the petty officer to death. If I don't find any conclusive proof of this theory though, and soon, we may all end up like Sinhta."
"Is therrre anything Science can do?" T'kaarch purred, "Can we combine ourrr experrrtises in orrrderrr to find this... someone or something?"
"Possibly." Cattmor started to say when something jumped to the forefront of her mind, before T'mpest cut her off, and stated pretty much what she was thinking. At that moment she wasn't sure she was speaking from memory, projected that thought to T'mpest's head, or was picking up what T'mpest was already thinking about.
"Definitely. If this is a neurogenic presence or device we need to identify it and find a way to block or reverse its effects," T'mpest said. It was a logical conclusion. The problem was identifying the cause. "Scans show nothing unusual in the gas cloud or on the Ranger. So if there is something here, it is not easily identified."
