Mission:
What Dreams May Come
Location: USS Ranger
ON
"Commander, we've lost contact with the away team."
T'mpest turned sharply. "Can you boost the signal?"
"I tried, but it isn't working," the woman at communications responded.
T'mpest went over to help the woman. "Communications is my hobby," she said, taking an empty console. She logged in to communications and tied in stellar cartography and adjusted communications to penetrate through the dense cloud. "Try it again," she said a few minutes later.
"Science, can you get a reading of some sort?" Keen asked as he came to alert. "Could a probe midway between the Ranger and party get a boost of signal?" He asked. "Might help?"
"Let me see..." T'kaarch purred, "It definetly won't harrrm, but unless we know what's jamming the signal, I can't say whetherrr it'll help, eitherrr."
[The Edmorn]
"Signal sent. I'm not sure if it made it," Miral announced. "But there was enough power for it to work." A moment later, the power flickered and died.
When the few pieces of illumination they did have failed, the entire compartment, indeed the entire ship was bathed in even further eerie darkness, the only sources of light left were the helmet lamps of each of their environmental suits. Cattmor had already held her breath for longer than was probably recommended, and her pulse quickened even more than it already was, as she took a slow intake of recycled air, wondering if their final message had been received, and more importantly, understood. She stood from the console desk and turned around, her back to the rest of the away team, and tapped the screen, willing it to turn on for that little extra light, and to make sure that everything was in fact dead, hoping they wouldn't end up in the same predicament. Catching sight of another figure before her across the room, her heart skipped a beat realising who it was, someone from her past, another life. He just stood, still, with a crooked smile, until he tapped two fingers to his temple lightly, and made the universal 'Quiet' gesture, finally crossing his arms with the same look of arrogant superiority he always practised with his students.
Miral slowly slid to the floor and ran through mental calculations as to how long it would take for the message to arrive, to be decoded, for help to arrive. Time was not on their side, neither were the odds, but still she was hopeful.
[USS Ranger]
"There's a message from the Edmorn." The officer at communications said, turning to the Commander. "But it doesn't make any sense."
"Play it over the intercom," T'mpest replied.
The screen came on and there was a photo of the cover of an old children's book called Hansel and Gretel. The book began to flip through the pages and stopped at a photo of the children caught in a cage as the witch stood by the oven. Seconds later Orin's voice was heard saying. "No Breadcrumbs, Gretel." Then the screen went blank.
Morgana began to tap at the console, looking over to the Captain. "They are in trouble." She said as she looked up to T'mpest. "It hard for me to explain but, No more Breadcrumbs, Gretel is a code we used when Captain... I mean Lieutenant Orin was warning us that he was in trouble and needed our help. It's a long and drawn out story that I am sure he would love to tell you some day, but for right now, we need to act, Captain."
T'mpest nodded. "Thank you." She thought for several moments before continuing.
"I want an away team in the shuttle bay in ten minutes. If the shuttle stops half way between the Ranger and the it should be able to lock onto the lifeforms on the ship and beam them aboard. If we boost communications the shuttle should then be able to navigate back here."
"Shuttle will be ready to launch in two minutes," the helmsman replied. "The emergency beacon should be strong enough for us to pick it up in this soup."
T'mpest turned to T'kaarch. "Launch a probe to boost communications. I don't want to risk losing a second team."
"Yes commanderrr!" T'kaarch purred. "Communications prrrobe out and heading to position, commanderrr."
[Shuttle]
The shuttle was prepped for launch by the time the team arrived. As soon as everyone was buckled in, the pilot launched.
Keen had the Medical kit on his shoulder as he entered the Shuttle Bay, his training as a Medical Technician as well as Counselor helped him in more ways than one through the years. He knew his wife was safe on the ship, he just wanted to see what he could do for those in need. He felt like the Prophets needed him here and he always listened to the Prophets.
Pyotr kept one eye on the Ranger so he wouldn't get out of sensor range as he headed in the direction of the Edmorn. "Can you pick them up?" he asked.
