769 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: In The Dark
Location: Citadel Tower, Citadel Prime
Timeline: Current

The spire that was Citadel Tower was a truly magnificent structure, Arkham realized, smirking a little and craning her head up to take a look as she strode out of the shuttle that had landed aboard the surface moments before. She paused, crossing her arms across the chest of her absolutely pristine white dress uniform.

"Absolutely magnificent, isn't it?" Arkham rasped quietly, looking to the two junior officers who had just exited the shuttle.

Carter looked up at the structure and felt it had a majestic, proud quality to it as it commanded the landscape. "Yes, sir," she replied, "it's quite an achievement."

"Yes Commander. It is a nice piece of real estate." Ador said while scanning the area with his cyber eyes.

Arkham nodded, finally taking her eyes off the structure as she noted the presence of the Nagasaki Diplomatic team, Arkham strode forward, eyeing the self-assured young man in front, a young woman who must have been his assistant or a bodyguard of some sort, and the Turian Ambassador. Noting a young woman in a uniform with red accents, Arkham figured that the head of the Nagasaki's CIC must be present as well.

Heading toward the group, Arkham paused -- the three Starfleet Officers within the group snapped to attention and gave the Commander a crisp salute. Arkham nodded before returning the archaic gesture of respect.

"Good afternoon. I'm Commander Arkham," the older officer rasped, rubbing her ruined jaw with a single gloved hand. "Fill me in people; what have we got here?"

Lieutenant Hughes smirked, looking at the older officer -- they'd all heard the tales of the heroics and misdeeds of Commander Rowena Arkham, Dominion War Hero and rumored former Section 31 operative. He was uncertain of how to proceed with the old officer -- clearly, no matter what he said, Rowena Arkham already knew the truth of the situation; she was not one to go anywhere without doing the appropriate research. Looking at the old officer's ruined face and dead eye, he understood now more than ever why they called this woman the "Arkham Horror".

"Our negotiations were very successful, Commander," Hughes said, a hint of arrogance creeping into his voice. "The Citadel Council is scheduled to reconvene tomorrow. An attempt as already been made on the Diplomatic team -- being the ranking officer here, I feel you aren't adequately --"

"I am quite protected," Arkham said coldly. She suddenly remembered why she had very much disliked dealing with this young man. "That's what Mr. Shran is for."

"This ain't my first rodeo here kid. I am worth at least four fleeties." Ador said with an evil scarred grin. "I am Jarhead wearing the gold kid." He added for fun.

"Do you think that whatever group tried to kill you all will make another attempt, Ambassador Nihlus?" Arkham asked, looking to the Turian. "Are they that dead set on disrupting the proceedings here?"

Nihlus nodded, "They will not stop until they have succeeded or they're dead. That simple."

"Well then," Arkham said, nodding. She'd had attempts made on her life before -- old Rowena Arkham was used to the idea. She didn't want the ride to be over, but she supposed that was a risk she had to take. Remembering the Counselor, Arkham added, "Oh, and where are my manners, Lieutenant Gerard Hughes, this is Counselor Carter. She'll be joining us for the meeting."

Hughes, noticing the quite young Ensign, extended his hand, giving her a charasmatic grin. "Pleasure to meet you, Ensign."

"Likewise, Lieutenant Hughes." Carter smiled broadly at him and looked him in the eye as she returned a firm handshake.

Arkham nodded, looking to the young woman from Combat Operations. "Well, Warrant, where do we stand on the CIC side of the house?"

Andrews smiled, "Five by five Commander. We can run all combat operations for the entire systems from this room, as well as coordinate and observe all starfleet operations within Citadel Space."

Arkham nodded, looking the young Warrant Officer over as she did so. Clearly Andrews had everything under control here. "Excellent, Warrant. Is there anything you've got that's going to require my immediate attention, or am I clear to attend the Council meeting as planned?"

Casey smiled, "Were all set here Commander. Just let me know what personnel you would like to transfer here, and I'll set up some orientation sessions for them."

Arkham nodded, smirking a little. The Warrant seemed to have things very much under control here. "All right. I'll have some of our people sent down immediately. In the meantime -- Mr. Hughes, lead the way."
