Check Up

582 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: In The Dark
Location: Sickbay

Ador marched into the sickbay. He scanned the small sickbay for the Doctor. He was not enthused to be having yet another check up. He had gotten three in the past year. He then spotted the Doctor.

"Lieutenant Mabren, I am here for my required check up." He said with a scarred painful looking smile.

Mabren looked up from the console and noticed the Andorion officer. "If you'll have a seat, the checkup will be over soon."

"Good Doc this will be my third one this year. My eyes are doing fine and no new pains." He said hoping it would speed up the exam. "No offense as many times as I have been in sickbay, I try an limit my visits. My mother is a doctor in the Andorian Defense Force. These are her eyes. And taking one look at me you can see I have been injured enough." He said with a scarred painful looking smile.

As Mabren started to run his scans, he asked, "Yes, I can see that. Have you thought of actually getting rid of the scars? Or are you like the XO, keep them fro intimidation?" After the beeps signaled that the scans were complete, Mabren moved to the center console and began to compare the scans.

"Doc these scars are road maps to my life. I earned each and last one of them. Besides its not the scars that slow me down it's the pain. That on the other hand if you can do a little for it I would appreciate it. Just as long as it won't effect my judgment or reflexes." He said with a rare bit self realization of his age. "I am an old warhorse. I need to serve and I am still able to do my job." Ador said with a melancholy scared smile.

"I see," Mabren said, embarrassed by how much he misjudged the Lieutenant, "Where does the pain come from?"

"Mostly from my back and face Doc. On my face as you can see I have been in a few knife fights with the Jemhadar. As for my back, I took shrapnel here. " He said as he pointed to a spot near his spine. "At the time, they could not remove it. It makes for a interesting morning when it flares up." He said with a slight sarcastic grin.

"And what about Andorian doctors? Why haven't they removed it?" he asked.

"They said it was too close to my spine to remove it safely. I am kind of used to it now. I am not saying it wouldn't be nice to get it out of there, however I wouldn't want to tempt fate." He said with a scarred smile.

"Ah," Mabren said, "Well, I don't know enough of Andorian biology, so I'll defer to them."

"Well Doc is there anything else? I have a department that needs shaping up." He said with an evil scarred smile.

Suddenly feeling very sorry for that particular department, Mabren answered, "No, we're all done until the next one. Or Prophets forbid, some accident."

"No offense Doc. I hope I don't have to see you again till my next checkup. I think my warranty has expired. Have a good day Doc." He said with a scarred but sarcastic smile.

"None taken, Lieutenant," Mabren said, "I prefer it that way."
