302 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Taylforth
Location: Bridge, USS Ranger
Timeline: Current

ON:

The silence seemed to haunt her; enveloping her like the bulkheads of the bridge around her. She sat motionless, one leg locked in place over the other, and waited. The minutes drew into long, foreboding hours that stretched out in front of her linear timeline. How long she had been sitting there since the departure of the away team, Elsie could not have honestly told you.

Her thoughts of late had been unprofessionally preoccupied with another matter. A traveller who had boarded the Ranger only a few days previous but had now thrust themselves so savagely and permanently into her life that any choice the captain had once had about the direction her own emotional life was now gone forever. An innocent thirteen year old had managed to turn Halliwell’s life so upside down that Elsie couldn’t quite tell you anything of truth anymore. Or keep her mind on the job at hand.

The bridge was one of the only familiar occupied places where Halliwell still felt comfortable. Since the rumour mill had churned out all kinds of falsehoods about the child’s lineage (and her current situation) Elsie hadn’t much felt like venturing to the Mess or walking the corridors of her own vessel until she had regained her own confidence. Her old demeanour.

She looked forward to the viewscreen, sighed one last time, and then stood up to retire again to her own quarters. She walked solemnly up the steps to the Ops station and without looking the lieutenant in the eyes, said, “You have the bridge, Mr. Blake,†before she boarded the turbolift and returned to her quiet, isolated domain.
