Mission:
Citadel Prime
Location: Sickbay
[Sickbay]
Dhindara had only been to sickbay the day before, but since she had been treated by Catherine Halsey, not by one of Starfleet's medical officers, she had gotten paged to report for her physical anyway. She didn't mind, after all it gave her a convenient excuse to get to know the rest of the crew, which she always liked to do. She walked into sickbay and looked around, identifying who had to be the Chief Medical Officer and smiling at him. "Master Chief Dhindara Vrel reporting for the routine physical, Sir", she said.
Mabren looked up from the console that was in the center of sickbay. "Hello Master Chief, you must be tired of this place?" Gesturing at one of the empty biobeds, Mabren said, "Well, lets see how you're holding up."
Dhindara chuckled. "I'm fine, I don't mind being checked out." She lay down on one of the beds. "Unless you're planning to have something prick or prod me without telling me I guess we're fine."
"Considering just being fixed after being stabbed, you're rather upbeat," Mabren said, scanning the young Betazoid. After the scan was completed, he walked over to the center console and compared the scans.
"Certain things are unavoidable", Dhindara said, "you deal with savages, they draw blood. I should have been more careful, my mental guard should have warned me, it was my own fault, in a way."
"Well," Mabren said, "It seems that Doctor Halsey is pretty good. Everything seems to be in order."
Dhindara smiled. "Indeed, I have no complaints. But I'm not often a guest in sickbays anyway."
"Well, without good reason, right," Mabren said, with a smile.
"I do sometimes require a day off to rest my mind", Dhindara replied, "when I have been required to do something that puts a lot of strain on my mind. I've had that during several assignments, where my telepathic powers had been needed. But there's little that can be done from a medical point of view."
"About your telepathy? Or the mission requirements?" Mabren asked. "For you telepathy, have you considered an inhibitor?"
"No!" Dhindara said, rather forcefully. "No, that would be like cutting the antennae off an Andorian. Besides, it's only when I've had to use it, because somebody else needed it. In which case an inhibitor would be counterproductive."
Mabren felt a bit bad about what he recommended, "I apologize, Master Chief, I forget what it is like for telepaths. It would be like cutting off someone's ability to feel. I didn't think fully. Perhaps, there could be a way to control it, using the inhibitor? Not cut it off completely, but dial it down, as the saying goes?"
Dhindara shook her head. "It's an after-effect when I've put too much strain on myself", she said, "and it's easily cured with rest. Ideally when spending some time away from the ship, in a shuttle or on a planet, where I'm only with one other person to focus on telepathically, a person I trust and who trusts me enough to open their mind to me."
"I see," Mabren said, "Then yes, medical can't really do anything for you."
"Don't get me wrong", Dhindara replied, "but if I have a choice I'd rather only come in for check-ups and be able to avoid sickbay the rest of the time."
"I think that's the way most sane people are," Mabren said, "Unless they're a hypochondriac."
"Or warriors", Dhindara replied. "I've seen many who think that they need to be physically hurt during training, so that in combat it isn't an unfamiliar sensation."
"See, I don't define those people as sane, but I can understand why they do it. Don't agree with it, but," he said.
"I don't agree with it either", Dhindara replied, "especially since they normally send their pain signals around uncontrolled. I don't appreciate that at all."
"Agreed. But those types usually rarely listen to sound medical advice. It's hard to help people when they don't listen," Mabren said.
"Yes", Dhindara replied, "yes, I know." She sighed. "Well, there's no helping it... literally."
"No, unfortunately not," the doctor replied. "Anything else?"
"I'll be fine, thank you, doctor", Dhindara replied.
"Your welcome, Master Chief," Mabren said, "Have a good one."
