Lighting our way with Sensors

490 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Looking for the Future in all the Wrong Places
Location: Bridge, USS Ranger
Timeline: Current

ON:

Halliwell made the short walk from her ready room across the busy bridge and to Blake’s Operations’ terminal. She stood on the opposite side of the heavy casing as preparations were evidently underway behind her. Officers darted back and forth readying stations for the Ranger’s departure into open space. The dissemination of information, Halliwell knew, didn’t always extend to every invested officer, but with the search pattern now decided, Elsie came to speak to her most integral aid.

“Lieutenant,†she began, flashing a quick and courteous smile to him, “here is our intended pattern of search for us. While en route, keep an open channel with the Fairfax and Archimedes to maintain distance and communication.â€

Blake winced in his seat at the gentle voice of Captain Halliwell plucking him from his brooding silence and concentration. "Of course, Captain," he smirked to cover his reaction before receiving the data PaDD and scrolled through the contents briefly. "Ma'am, if I may could I offer an alternative to this search?"

Halliwell narrowed her eyes in an impressed yet querying manner. “Of course,†she replied, half shocked and half intrigued. “I’d welcome the suggestion.â€

"Wouldn't changing the frequency of our scanners help locate the QAR vessel fractionally easier since we already have several files of information in our data banks?"

Halliwell considered the proposal for a brief second mentally and silently as the look on her face remained the same. She inhaled slowly, cocked her head to the right and then smiled. Gripping the light coloured surround, she anchored her small frame about the Ops terminal and joined Blake, now standing shoulder to shoulder. Tapping in her own calculations, the results quickly filtered through the bio-neural gel packs and scrolled down on the screen before them both. “Looks as though you may be right,†she said, nodding to him with a proud and yet authoritative gesture. “Get onto Science and have them modify our sensors. Then, relay the modifications to the other two vessels. But make it quick, Lieutenant.â€

She stepped down from behind the terminal, paused for a brief moment and then smiled almost maternally at the young officer.

"Aye ma'am," Blake nodded feeling a little relieved that the captain listened to his suggestion and equally thrilled that she had granted the changes. It wasn't a great adjustment but if it cut corners and reduced the search-time it didn't really matter how it went about.

He felt the captain smiling at his back as he contacted the science teams on Ranger, then their escort sister vessels and wondered what he'd done to please her so.
