760 words; about a 4 minute read
Mission:
Structured Shoreleave - Marchwiel
Location: USS Fairfax, Deck 8
Timeline: (Present)
On:
Rodney Blake stumbled into his quarters and threw two holobooks down on his desk. He laid back onto his bed and heaved a great sigh of relief. Today had been hell for him. To any other engineer working under pressure is the best to work but for Rodney it was simply hell. He spent all day working on the dynathium chambers with constant:
"You done yet 'Whizz kid'?"
"Hey it shouldn’t take this long kid!"
From the Chief Engineer. He was one of the many skeptics on board that didn't think a 16 year old had any place on a starship. He always put Rodney in uncomfortable positions and gave him unrealistically difficult assignments with minuscule time to complete them. He is constantly made fun of and teased in engineering and being as socially awkward as he is he just bows his head and does his best to ignore them.
"Replicator. Cold water pl-please", he cursed silently. His nervous stutter is one of his own pet peeves.
The outline of a glass appeared in the replicator and was quickly filled in with molecules to reveal water in a traditional looking glass. He stood up and crossed to take it. Then he sat down at his desk and began reading through the holobooks. One was a pamphlet about the USS Ranger and another was a short manual on the USS Ranger's revolutionary new warp core. The pictures of the USS Ranger’s engine room were enough to almost make his mouth water. He had nearly screamed when pleasure when he heard he had been accepted. And promoted as well!
There was only one thing about this that worried him and that one thing came knocking on his door almost an instant later.
A buzz came at the door.
"Um, Come in! he called not taking his eyes off the pamphlets.
A teenage girl of about 16 bounded into the room with perpetual spring in her step. She has an air of innocence about her. Wide eyes, rosy cheeks, and luscious hair she was one of the most beautiful girl aboard and she was Rodney Blake's best friend.
"Hey, what’s up", she asked excitedly. She was not particularly excited at the second; she just had a voice that simulated it.
"Oh, hello. Nothing. Just got back from engineering", he said still scanning the pamphlet.
"I bet their working you like dogs down there! I heard we are due for Marchwiel in a few days."
"Yeah, that's probably it."
Now Mary got irritated. She wasn’t the type to enjoy being ignored.
"What is that your reading, Mister?" she said crossing to the desk.
"Oh, its nothing. N-nothing at all!" Too late. She snatched the holobook before he could hide it properly.
"What? "The U.S.S Ranger"?"
"Oh, its nothing. Err, just reading about Starfleet and all that", he said desperately trying to cover himself up.
"You’re a terrible liar, Rodney. What's up", she asked growing concerned she took his hand in hers with interwoven fingers.
"I, err, I applied for that sh-ship", he said looking away.
"What!? Why?!" she demanded taken aback by surprise.
"Its the most advanced ship in Starfleet and I don’t get any respect and-"
"This is what it’s about? Respect? You don’t get any because you don’t deserve it! You spend all day in your little shell and then you tell me you've applied for another ship? What makes you think you will get 'respect' there? she lectured now very angry.
Hurt, Rodney took his hand out of hers and turned his head. He looked down at the floor realizing the mistake he had made.
"I’m sorry, Rodney. I didn’t mean it."
"Yes you did! And I deserved it! Every single word!" he said with almost a tint of anger in his voice.
"Rodney, its a great opportunity and you should pursue it. Who am I to tell you how to run your life?" she said apologetically.
"I really should take a shower", he said standing up.
"Rodney." she said suddenly embracing him.
"Wh-what?", he said completely dumbstruck.
She leaned her head closer to his ear and whispered, "I love you.", and then she kissed him slowly on the cheek. Then she released him and ran out of the door onto the hallway.
He stood frozen and turned redder than coal. He raised his boney hand up to his face to make sure he was still him.
"Bravo, Rodney Blake. Bravo. he muttered bitterly heading for the shower.
