Resurrection - Part Two

731 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Structured Shoreleave - Marchwiel
Location: Deep Space Five - Guest Quarters
Timeline: Two Weeks Ago

ON:

"I'm sorry, Lieutenant, but our orders were clear. We had to depart immediately and the infirmary staff at Deep Space Five were insistent that there was no way you would be able to return to duty in time."

"I understand, sir... But I'm not sure what I'm required to do next."

"I spoke to Intelligence HQ when we departed. You will need to contact Admiral T'Lin - she will confirm your next assignment with you... Good luck, Lieutenant. Serenity out."

Jason Fisher reached forward, closed the comm-channel, slumped back in his chair and let out an enormous sigh, coupled with an expletive, under his breath. Refocusing himself, he addressed his console again, keying in a number of commands, and, before long, the wizened face of the Vulcan, Rear-Admiral T'Lin appeared before him.

"Lieutenant," she began, typically emotionless, "Commander Patterson has informed me of your situation: As soon as you fit to travel, you are instructed to return to Earth for a new assignment."

"What type of assignment, Admiral?" Fisher responded. Upon discovering that a return to the Serenity would not be possible, he had assumed that he would be found another ship-board assignment. A return to Earth and, in all likelihood, a desk job, was not what he had in mind.

"You have proven ability in intelligence analysis, Mister Fisher," T'Lin continued, "It is our opinion that your talent would be best served in that capacity."

Fisher debated the Admiral's words for a few seconds before responding. "With respect, Admiral," he began, choosing his words very carefully, "I would prefer a like-for-like shipboard assignment."

"It was considered." T'Lin replied, "but there is no ship in the vicinity that can take you on that basis."

"I understand, Admiral." Fisher replied, down-heartened. "Will there be anything else, sir."

"No, Lieutenant." T'Lin answered, stoically, "That will be all. T'Lin out."

And then the screen flashed black and the admiral's face was replaced by the familiar United Federation of Planets logo. Fisher sat, staring at the screen for several minutes, mulling over what was to happen next. He really didn't want to go back to Earth, after all, there was nothing for him there. Granted his mother still lived on Earth, but he had barely seen her since Plymouth. Of the two people that had really held him together in the last few years, Mikaela was on Protector and Kahgen... well it was likely that Kahgen was dead, although he still refused to give up hope. No, there was nothing left for him on Earth any more.

Which still left the question 'What now?' He loved Intelligence, but he hated the thought of returning to Earth more. Then a thought struck him. His sister, Anna, had entered Starfleet Academy two years after him and, as such, had just graduated. He had been gutted at missing the ceremony, but the Serenity's mission had made it impossible to return. "Computer," he instructed, "Display personnel file for Ensign Anna Fisher - authorisation Fisher-delta-theta-seven." Noting that there were definite advantages to still having intelligence access codes, he smiled as his sister's file was displayed before him. "Hmm." he mused as he read through her file, "USS Ranger." Anna was a junior engineer aboard the Intrepid-class vessel. Absent mindedly he continued reading and only stopped when he reached the formal reprimand entered in to her record for fraternising with a fellow student in her freshman year. Quickly he closed the file and attempted to purge that latest piece of information from his mind.

But he was beginning to formulate an idea. Perhaps he wouldn't be able to continue to serve as an Intelligence Officer, but...

"Computer," he instructed again, "bring up the current crew manifest for the USS Ranger: highlight open positions."

The computer complied and very quickly Jason Fisher's attention was drawn to one particular position which had been recently vacated.

He smiled to himself as he leaned over his computer. His newly-formed plan was certainly a long shot, but it wasn't an impossibility. He quickly accessed Starfleet's document templates and, with a growing sense of excitement...

...began to compose a transfer request.
