A Missing Piece

John was feeling a little sad so after his shift he headed for the Golden Crown. As he stepped thru the doors he noticed Lt. Carter sitting at one of the tables. He realized he hadn’t met her yet which is odd since most new crewman have to meet the Counselor when they come aboard. He sauntered over to the table stopping a few meters away “Excuse me Lt. Mind if I join you?� He asked.

"Ensign Bradshaw, I am Ship's Counselor Lieutenant JG Lucy Carter. Pleased to finally make your acquaintance." Carter extended a hand and smiled into his blue eyes. "Please do sit down. Would you like to join me for a cup of tea?"

John returned the smile, and sat down in the empty chair “Thank you, pleasure to meet you as well,� He replied.

Carter sipped her tea, both elbows on the table. She sensed he was shy. She put her cup down on the table and said "I appreciate we haven't found time for a chat in my office yet. I like to let people settle in a bit before I ask to see them. Tell me, Ensign, how are you finding life on board? Have you discovered the holodeck yet? There are some really very good skiing programs on there."

“So far it’s going well, I have found the holodeck, but I’m not sure I’ll be going back to one anytime soon,� He replied. As he signaled the waiter to come over.

"Really?" said Carter with genuine surprise. She found the holodeck one of the most useful relaxation devices ever invented. "Have you had a bad experience on there?" The waiter appeared.

“I’ll have what she’s having,� He told the waiter as he returned his attention on her. “Well I agree they are good relaxing devices, and I will go back to one it’s just that……..,�

Lucy put down her tea and looked kindly at him. "It's OK, Ensign. Anything you tell me will always be kept in strictest confidence."

Taking a deep breath he continued. “Well I met this woman when I first got onboard, and she was sassy, but fun she made me laugh on the inside, and out. I don’t make friends very well it’s something I struggle with in my life, but there was something about her that made me feel relaxed,� He explained as he took a sip of his tea. “I took her to the holodeck to enjoy something I like doing which was rock climbing we seemed to be hitting it off when she told me she was leaving the ship it was like a twentieth century term Bombshell hit me I know we only knew each other for a very short time, but it was like we knew each other for a long time,� He told her as he slumped in his chair with a dismal look.

"Oh dear, Ensign. It doesn't sound like you have had a very good time of things recently. But I tell you what - there are so many lovely people on board here and, let's face it, the universe is huge. There is bound to be someone out there, just waiting for you to come along!"

John’s sat up in his chair changing his frown to a slight smile “Your right Lt. I just need to relax, and get out there, and try to make new friends,� He said as a warm feeling started to warm his insides. “Sometimes I wish I was an android that way I could insert a program that would help me be more outgoing,� He remarked with a sarcastic tone.

Carter said "I think we all feel like that at times. Do you know what, the truth is that nobody is really outgoing. Some just put on a better act than others."

“Your probably right I guess we all have a little shy person inside us that tends to overpower us at times, but it just seems easy said then done, but I’ll continue to work on it I guess,�

"Well thanks for listening Lieutenant I feel better now," He assured her as he got up from the table nodding politely, and exiting the lounge.
