429 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Balowlli System
Location: Carter's Office
Timeline: Current

ON:

Captain Kerr strode into Lucy Carter’s office with a smile on his face and an almost jaunty stride. It had seemed like days since he had visited, and even longer in an official capacity, however, today the counters would be reset.

“Lieutenant, he called out as he entered, nodding to her his greeting. “I was wondering if we could have a little word concerning the crew’s well-being. Do you have a moment?

Lucy rose to her feet and smiled. She was always happy to see the Captain. "I should be delighted, sir. Please take a seat."

“Thank you, he politely replied, taking the seat on the opposite side of her desk.

"The crew are restless. They are keen to get going again on another mission and I am afraid they are using their energies in different ways. The level of practical jokes is increasing."

“Practical joking? he questioned, rather harshly than he had liked.

"Someone recently gave the EMH head-lice then waited until an engineer had deleted that subroutine before returning to make one of his legs two inches shorter than the other. Needless to say the EMH was not remotely amused."

“He has a cantankerous personality program as it is, Kerr replied, attempting a stifle an abrupt smirk. He knew that discipline on a starship, especially such a small starship, should be more regimented, however, the little joke had amused the captain, something that hadn’t happened for awhile. Straightening his face, he continued. “What do you suggest, Counsellor?

"My recommendation, sir, is to give them something else to focus on."

“Such as?

"Such as... a competition. An event." She broke off for a moment in thought then looked at him again. "A competition where they have to invent something for the ship." She was beaming at him now. "Surely they can all think of something?"

“Maybe they could, Kerr replied, his lips now curling down in a mock-pondering expression. “However, this is your idea, Lucy. Why don’t I leave you to organise it?

"Do you know what... that would be most acceptable, sir." She smiled broadly at him, pleased to have something to do. Something positive. Something to help.

“Good, he replied, noticing her cheery smile. “That’s settled, then. Get back to me with what you need and I’ll make sure you get it.
