793 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Balowlli System
Location: Chief Intelligence Officer's Office

Shalie watched as Yvette walked towards the lift. Something a little more then O'Connell was bothering her but Shalie had more amusing things on her mind. Normally when she approached the office of a fellow department head she would tap the chime and wait for permission, but she had already confirmed with the computer that he was alone and this time it was she that was bored. She opened the door and stood in the door way with a cocky smile on her face. "So O'Connell...piss anyone off lately?"

Drew turned his face up to Shalie Montgomery as she entered. The sour expression on his face turned to one of knowing amusement. A smile tugged at the right corner of his mouth. "At least three people since yesterday, Shalie. You?"

"Surprisingly...no one." Shalie said with an almost amazed tone. She moved into the office allowing the door to hiss closed behind her. She slowly made her way to a chair across from his. Sitting down she tapped her fingers on the arm rest as she posed her next question. "So I just ran into your new partner in the hallway...Something was bothering her and for the life of me I couldn't put my finger on it." A devious smile crossed her face. At best he would blow her off, but there was always a chance.

"She just left the office of the Chief Intelligence Officer, specifically that of Andrew O'Connell...there's bound to be a number of things bothering her." Drew stood and crossed to the replicator, ordering a mug of coffee and returning to her unbidden attention. "So what's bothering you, or rather, what brings you to my office?"

Shalie laughed and shook her head slightly. "Absolute boredom...to be honest...that and I wanted to know how your little date...I mean meeting went last night." Maybe some part of Shalie was jealous at the thought, but it was so far from what she was feeling at the moment that it might as well not exist. "I am assuming that has something to do with the tension."

"With tact like that, you should have been a counselor," Drew replied dryly. "The meeting which turned into a date later turned into a disaster. I think it might have something to do with Lieutenant LaFaal rushing out just now. Just another failure of the O'Connell Challenge." Drew locked his brilliant blue eyes on hers and shrugged.

"I am beginning to think you are using that as an excuse." Shalie said keeping her brown eyes on his. "One of those...self fulfilling prophecy kind of things" She was serious. Drew may have been an ass but he wasn't that hard to get along with. As long as you were willing to roll with the punches. "Well on the other hand...having to have dinner with you in public might make any girl run for the hills." she added jokingly.

Drew smiled mischievously. "Care to find out?" he asked, knowing she would likely jump at the bait.

Shalie looked him over as she pondered the correct answer. It was one thing to have dinner in one of their quarters or the occasional beach side cabana but did she really want to risk the inevitable humiliation in front of her shipmates. But the idea was amusing. A smiled matching that of Drew O'Connell's crossed her face, giving him her answer.

"Tonight, 1900 hours, the Golden Crown," Drew suggested.

"Fine...fine.. twist my arm...if you really want to take me out on a date so badly I will oblige." Shalie said with a cocky tone. "Besides it has been a while since I have made a fool of myself in front of my ship mates." She bite her lip before deciding to push herself up from her chair. "Well I had better not waste all of your amusement powers in the solitude of your office." With that she turned for the door. As the door hissed open she stopped, looking over her shoulder at Drew. "What is the dress code for tonight?...White dress, black dress, or my uniform?" She couldn't resist giving him a little jibe.

"How about you come naked? It seems to suit you," Drew responded jovially. He could tell by the look in her eye and the way she placed her hand on her hip that she was not amused. Deciding to take another tact, Drew rallied. "Come casual, how's that? Now you get to decide what to wear."

Shalie rolled her eyes and with that she was gone. She had a few other things to do before their dinner including speaking with a certain doctor.
