Personnel Transfer

636 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Shoreleave - Welcoming Old Friends and New
Location: Captain's Ready Room
Timeline: Current

ON:

Drew stepped up to the CO's ready room and readjusted his jacket with a short tug at the bottom. Depressing the button beside Kerr's ready room door, Drew announced himself. Still self-conscious about his new hair cut, Drew pushed the hair back from his forehead as he prepared to meet his commanding officer again.

“Come in, Kerr replied instinctively, not looking up from the padds that were cluttered around his desk.

Drew stepped inside the commanding officer's ready room, noting it had changed since the last time he was there. Nothing overly noticeable, but to an intelligence officer, the changes were obvious. Coming to stand across from Coltan Kerr, Drew held the PaDD he carried out at arm's length. "I'd like to request a personnel transfer, Captain. Petty Officer Markus Ramsey has come to my attention recently and as you know, we need an engineering specialist in the Intelligence department. I'd like him, sir."

Kerr placed down the padd he held in his hand and flicked his eyes upwards to the Lieutenant’s. Since taking command of the Nova class, Kerr had dealt with his share of transfers. People leaving for promotions, people simply not fitting into the fold he had created onboard, and, sadly, as the pangs of guilt still coursed through his veins, people who had died. But, this was the first request he had received in relation to an existing position and crewmember.

After a moment of silent consideration he said, “I assume that you have cleared the transfer with Lieutenant Sheedy, Drew. He then took the padd from O’Connell’s hand and thumbed through it, the familiar sound of the scrolling text trilling between them. “Petty Officer Ramsey has yet to register on my radar, I have to admit. He thought for a moment and then smiled. “Young man, isn’t he?

"I've submitted the request to Lieutenant Sheedy, Captain. I imagine she'll have no problem with the transfer as he's new to her department and to the Archimedes...she hasn't had time to train him yet, sir. As for his age, I was sixteen when Starfleet caught me with my hand in the cookie jar, to use a metaphor. Young or not, he seems to be an exceptional enlisted officer and he possesses the skills I need to fill a vacancy in my department."

The Trill studied his Chief Intelligence officer for a moment, and a wry smile, born from the thought of remembrance, crossed his face subtly. One thing sure could be said about Lieutenant O’Connell’s attitude and that was that it reminded the captain of his own youthful spunk.

“I’ll grant the request, Lieutenant, he replied after another moment. “But you are to be held directly responsible for any mission-related work you assign to him. A cross-over career is hard enough to manage at the best of times. But, I have faith in your own judgement. And if you believe he’ll be an asset to your department, then you’ll have him… provided<> Sheedy approves the release of her own. But I doubt that you’ll have a problem persuading her.

Drew nodded in appreciation. "Thank you, Captain. I'll see to his training personally. I assure you, he'll conform to Intelligence standards, sir."

“Then I trust in your confidence, Drew, Kerr beamed. As Drew stood to leave, the Trill broke eye contact with him, picked up a PaDD that was strewn on his desk and looked down at it, speaking with a half-hidden smile. “I’ll look forward to reading his first evaluation report, Lieutenant.

Stopping just inside the office, the door opened before him, Drew turned. "It'll be on you desk by week's end, Captain." With that statement, Drew turned and exited the office, leaving Kerr to his thoughts.
