503 words; about a 3 minute read
Mission:
Balowlli System
Location: Quarters of Shalie Montgomery
Timeline: Current
Ben…Ben….what is going on? Shalie yelled as Ben stormed past her. She reached out and hooked her hand in the crook of his elbow. “I…will not….stay in the service….of that….man. Ben practically spat. Pulling her arm harshly from Shalie’s grab. “You can keep your deluded idea of what you deserve….but I won’t
With that Shalie watched as Ben walked off the Utopia. She didn’t know at the time but it would be 19 years before she would see him again.
As the door shut in her mind Shalie awoke. Lazily blinking the sleep from her eye she looked around her dark room. Every time she closed her eyes the sensation of Ben leaving flooded her. That was the last day she honestly trusted anyone. For someone to love her that way he claimed to and then to just leave her was more then her young mind could handle.
Shalie threw the blanket off as she walked over to the window. There wasn’t much to see but the faint light of the stars were comforting. Some where out there Ben was happy with his new family and his new wife. She had blocked her thoughts of him until that day on the Utopia. In hind sight she never should have gone…with all the events that took place on her shore leave she should have just stayed with Drew. The altercations with him were at least routine.
Shalie may not have felt the expected side effects of drinking to much but some part of her was still under the influence. She looked longingly at the bed but had no desire to have more dreams about Ben. That life was over and she would never get it back. She had loved him but, that too was gone. She was genuinely happy for him. She would have just dragged him down. She would have drag anyone down.
Shuffling though her small quarters she ordered a hot cup of coffee. As hot as she could get it without it still boiling. She wrapped her emerald hand around the outside of the cup as she moved towards the table. The heat was soothing as she carefully took a sip. The hot liquid having the opposite effect of the synthol. She could feel herself becoming more focused and less dreary.
Today was going to be a long day. Her second day officially back in work. Shalie hoped that she would be able to bury all of these memories and feelings in her work. It was how she had coped the first time and she was sure that it would this time around. Talking to someone might be the healthier option, but that would mean trust and that is something she wasn’t ready to do.
Shalie sat staring out the window, getting lost in the emptiness and innocence of space.
