The turbolift doors sealed on the security team delivering Harwood to her incarcerated fate as Lane turned to Commander Arkham and his crew.
“By the looks of it, it seems that the duty roster has served as more of guideline around here lately rather than an actual schedule. Everyone, take your stations.� As the gaggle of officers criss-crossed each to adopt their usual stances, Lane leant in to Commander Arkham and whispered, “We’ll discuss everything later. I have to speak to Command first. You have the bridge until I return.� He almost smiled at the sentiment as he turned to his stationary crew.
“Mr Warner, liaise with Engineering and get that core fired up. I have a feeling we’ll be leaving orbit very soon. Ms Montgomery, ready the ship and get everything back to normal.�
Turning to Lucy, he smiled warmly and said, “Lucy, go get a hot shower, some rest and some sleep. You deserve it.� He patted her gently on the shoulder in an affectionate way that indicated his sorrow for her treatment over the past week. “Go on, go.�
Lane then turned to face his unfamiliar ready room and departed the bustling bridge, sealing himself in and sitting down at his desk almost mindlessly. It took several moments for him to collect his thoughts by the time that Lieutenant Montgomery chimed in with her ship-ready status.
The Trill looked upon the blackened screen and silently hailed Command.
“Admiral Appleby, here, Captain…� the voice sounded almost eagerly.
“Admiral,� Lane respectfully nodded. “Everything is now under control and Alexandra Harwood is being taken to our brig as we speak.�
“Good, Captain. We’re glad to hear it. Naturally, she’ll have to be delivered to us at your earliest possible convenience, and since my information shows that you have completed the mission tasked to the Archimedes, I am ordering you to return to Earth immediately.�
Lane nodded once again with compliance and sighed inwardly at the relief of returning back to Command Headquarters.
“As for the other matters, Captain… Lieutenant Lucy Carter?� he read from a handy padd, “and how Alexandra Harwood managed to usurp your ship.�
Lane breathed outward, pushing the spent air through his cheeks as he raised his eyebrows. “Admiral, that will all be in my report, sir,� he replied, clearly not intent on discussing the matters in the here and now.
“Understood, Captain,� the man said understandingly. “I’ll expect a meeting once you have dry-docked. Appleby out.�
The screen fell black again, and Lane leant backwards against the support of this chair rest. Raising the comm. again, he spoke into the air as he closed his eyes, shutting out his surroundings as best he could.
“Yvaine,� he said, as she replied shortly after. “Tell Rory I’ll be on my way back to our quarters once I’ve given the order to return back to Earth. Everything is dealt with and I think, back to normal. Let Catherine know the same. Call ahead to her family back on Earth. I’m sure Rory will want to spend time with them and her friends for the brief time we’ll be back.�
“Will do, Colt,� the elderly voice warmly replied. “Will do.�
