Mission:
Behind the Mask of Familiarity
Location: USS Daring // USS Archimedes
Timeline: Current
Captain Lane entered the bridge from the turbo-lift, and an eerie silence wafted through the still air and stifled his ears. Since the lock-down, bridge activity had come to a stand-still. Dropping anchor up in orbit did not require the Chief Flight Control Officer to be posted, and with the USS Daring keeping an eye out for troubles on the horizon, it left little for the panicked crew to do but sit and wait out the storm.
As he silently passed across the deck toward his ready room, the beep that shattered the glass of silence startled him. Swinging around, the young ensign tapping at the Operations console looked up.
“Captain, it’s the USS Daring. Commander Kirov would like to speak to you.
“Very well, the Trill replied. “Patch it through to my ready room.
"Captain," Kirov greeted when the Trill's face appeared on the monitor. "New problems?" he asked.
Lane broke his gaze from the screen and looked about the room, nervously. “I take it your scans picked up our long-range communications black-out, he said with a raised eyebrow. “We have it under control, Commander. I have my Chief Ops working on the issue at the moment. We should have it up and running later today. How are things running on your end of the scene?
Kirov sat there a moment, before saying anything. He suspected more was going on the Nova-class vessel than her Trill Captain was letting on, but he also understood that occasionally a commander need the time to think without Command on your back.
"Understood," the Russian commander finally said with the slightest hint of a smile on his face. "Of course if there is anything that my crew and I can do for you and your ship Captain, we stand by." Looking off screen for a moment, he picked up a PADD before saying, "It's all quiet on the Western front. Though there is a bogey that hovers just at the edge of scanner range."
“Really? Lane questioned. “Do you have any more information on it?
"Not much I'm afraid," Kirov said, "They don't stay in sensor range long. They seem to be watching us as much as we are watching them. But from the readings, it seems to be a small converted passenger liner."
“Converted? Lane questioned again, more to himself than the Russian commanding officer. “Would you keep an eye on it, Commander? he went on, knowing that that was the first thing he would do. "Anything else I should know about?
"Of course we will Captain," Kirov said, studying the Trill's face for a moment, "No, there's nothing else pressing. Just a question." He paused before asking, watching the Trill, "Where are the Taurians? I got the impression from the supplied information that they shared the Federation's interest."
“Since the attack on Commander Arkham, Commander, we have heard little of them. The Nagasaki’s negotiation party are still on the surface and organising their efforts. All we can do is sit and wait. I have no idea what exactly is unfolding down there. We’re here to keep an eye out, not to interfere.
"Understood, I was just curious," the Russian Commander stated.
“No, problem, Commander. I’ll be in contact should anything… develop. Lane out.
"Understood, Captain," Kirov said, before the screen went black.
