Mission: Behind the Mask of Familiarity
Location: Ship's counsellor's quarters
Timeline: 64068.98

ON:

Lucy Carter had few friends to speak of. Since her arrival on board the Archimedes, she had tried to create a couple of friendly relationships with some of the crew but had so far only succeeded in getting a hologram on her side and falling on top of Larkin, which she was sure had not gone down at all well.

She was therefore surprised to received a letter from Earth bearing the emblem of Starfleet. She sat on the edge of her bed and pressed a button on her PADD to activate the recording.

The face of a woman appeared. She had expertly styled long, brown hair, deep brown eyes and long eyelashes. Maria Traho.

Lucy thought she had seen the last of Maria with her graduation of the Academy. Not content with sharing a room with Lucy in the first year, Maria had gone on to ensure she had also shared a room in subsequent years. How she had managed that, Lucy had never quite been sure but suspected that Maria had used her best skills on the people who mattered.

Lucy closed her eyes briefly and remembered, with some disgust, the nights where she had been woken from her sleep at an early hour of the morning as Maria had dragged back yet another drunken cadet to their room. She had pulled the covers over her head and tried hard not to hear their intoxicated infatuations with each other.

Each liaison that Maria made, meant a step further away from the ultimate goal - graduation at Starfleet. Her studies always took a back seat. However, she was a girl who knew how to get what she wanted and her success at the Academy was actually down to Lucy's hard work. There was not one assignment of Maria's where Lucy had not done all the hard work for her. How Lucy had been conned like that, she was not sure. But she was sure that Maria had also had "liaisons" with the people at the top. The ones who got her the room with Lucy year after year. The ones who ensured she passed all her tests. The ones who mattered.

"Hi, Luce! How are you? I bet you are wondering what little old me is doing getting in touch again? Well guess what! I am going to be on your ship!" She blinked several times and flicked her long brown hair to one side. A podgy hand appeared on her shoulder and she looked up with a childish smile on her face.

"Sweet Nelly" she said in a whispered baby voice. She looked back at the viewscreen, more composed. "So I look forward to seeing you very soon. You know what a duffer I am at piloting those shuttles so I have managed to fine a dear little Ensign to take me to your USS Archibald."

"Archimedes," Lucy hissed under her breath.

"See you soon, Luce. Maybe we could share quarters again! It''ll be just like the old days. Ciao, darling!"

The viewscreen blipped into unconsciousness and Lucy closed her eyes tightly.
