After the group finished in the science lab, Mabren thought he should talk with Sheedy to get the radiation pulse set up. Turning, he walked out of the lab and headed for the turbolift. As he approached the doors opened and a few crew members walked out, emptying the lift.
Walking in, he turned and faced the doors before calling out; "Main engineering."
As the lift descended through the ship, Mabren got thinking about what would need to be done. There were more than a few people on the crew that he would want to inoculate. Starting with Mr. Kerr. Taking a deep breath over the concern for the Trill's health the lift slowed and then stopped.
The doors parted onto a incredibly busy deck. Crew members rushing back and forth, calling out commands and responses. Stepping out of the lift, Mabren was walking slowly, trying his best to stay out of every ones way. But failed in that endeavor.
The doctor and a Crewman collided as the young man was running to bring something across the space. When the Crewman got up he said, "What do you think your doing? Can't you se..." He trailed off when he noticed he knocked over an officer. "Sir," he started, extending his hand to help Mabren up to his feet, "I'm so so sorry. I didn't even see you."
Laughing, Mabren accepted the Crewman's hand and stood up, "It's alright Crewman...."
"Christiansen, sir," he answered.
"It's alright, Crewman Christiansen," Mabren said again, helping pick up all the tools that had scattered about. "If you could just let me know where Lieutenant Sheedy is, all is forgiven."
Skanda was just on her way out of Main Engineering when Christiansen called out to her over the din. "Lieutenant! A second!"
The green-skinned alien walked over to find Lieutenant Mabren standing beside the crewman. "Ah, Mabr'n, jus' th' man I wan'ed t' see." She nodded to Christiansen. "Thank y', Crewm'n."
After the Crewman moved off, Mabren moved closer to the edge of the corridor to try to stay out of every ones way. "What did you want to see me about? The gel packs?"
Skanda raised an eyebrow. "Gel packs? I guess y' foun' some'in', then, eh?" This must have been what Lane wanted to see her about.
"Yes," Mabren answered, "We have. Their is a virus going through the gel packs that rewrites the genetic code. They eventually begin to pull to much power and overload. Right now, roughly half the system is infected. We need to slow the spread as much as we can until a cure can be found. Which is why I'm here." He paused before he dropped his bombshell, "We want to send a Meson radiation pulse through the gel packs."
"Gel packs," Skanda growled. "We shoulda known that'd be th' probl'm." She sighed and tapped her fingers against her thigh, thinking. "Will i' affec' th' crew?" She shrugged apologetically. "I don't know much abou' meson radiat'n."
"It's supposedly similar to Baryon radiation that's used against the Temecklian virus on Bajor. So it's not that dangerous. But still, I think that fifteen millirads every two hours should be enough to slow the spread of the virus until we can work out a cure. And it shouldn't effect the crew, but to be safe, I'll be ordering a inoculation series. Just to be safe."
"Alrigh'." Skanda waved at her assistant chief, who came trotting over with a padd in her hand. "Cress, 'ow long woul' i' take t' se' up a rad'ati'n pulse through th' gel packs? Abou' fif'een millirads ev'ry two 'ours?" Skanda glanced back at Mabren to confirm the numbers.
"That's right," Mabren said with a nod.
Skanda passed the nod on to Maven, who worked her padd for a second before replying in her slight mechanical twang. "It shouldn't take more than two hours, but we'd better run some tests before we set the radiation loose in the system."
"I agree," Skanda said, backing up her assistant. Then she looked to the half-Bajoran man beside her. "'s there a time limi' t' this? 'side fr'm ASAP?"
"No, there's not. That's just fine," Mabren conceded.
"Fine, we'll get it done," Maven said curtly and whisked off. Skanda tipped a nod to the lieutenant and carried off after her assistant chief. There was work to be done.
Returning the nod to the retreating Chief Engineer, Mabren turned and headed for the turbolift to head back to sickbay.
