Stopping By

668 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Wolves in Sheep's Clothing
Location: Dernah's Office
Timeline: Current

Commander Lane needed to stretch his legs a little. Being sat up in orbit still made him feel slightly claustrophobic, even though he knew that zipping around the galaxy as he wished, he would still be contained in this slightly undersized Nova class vessel.

As he walked the corridor down on Deck 3, he passed by Lieutenant Dernah's office, and, having no reason to head into it before today, decided to see how the Betazoid was settling in, and what he had done with the décor since he had decided to occupy it.

Not wanting to stride on in, as was his prerogative, he stood outside the tightly closed doors and chimed his presence.

"Enter at your own peril," came Dernah's response. Brendan was seated behind his desk reading through the many padds that Commander Lane had given him at the briefing. He was feeling bad for not having much to say during the senior staff meeting.

"Lieutenant," he said, stepping into the new office, "nice place you got." He stood in front of the desk and smiled. "Settling in?"

"As best I can, Sir. What can I do for you?" Brendan asked his superior officer. He felt a little ill at ease with Lane just stopping by with no announcement but then he felt that was a Captain's prerogative.

"Oh, nothing, really, Lieutenant," he said, looking about him as he spoke. "I just wanted to come down, see of there's anything I can really do for you… Any provisions that you need? I must confess, I haven't seen this space before. She's a small ship, but, before everything moves in it is just an empty room, isn’t it?"

"Yes Sir. My preference is for larger ships, such as Sovereign- or Galaxy-classes. Though I must admit that this tiny vessel is growing on me," Brendan smiled at the Commander. "I think I am going to like it here very much.

"Good, Lieutenant. I'm glad," he said, warmly. "Well, you know where I am should you need me. Have you checked in with your First Officer yet, Commander Arkham?"

"No Sir, I haven't. I wasn't aware that I should."

"It's customary, Lieutenant. I advise that you do. You certainly don't want to get on her bad side." Lane smiled a little at the thought.

"I understand, Commander. I'll schedule a time to meet with Commander Arkham at her earliest convenience, then," Brendan said to his new CO with a light smile. "Is she available now, Commander?"

"I'm not in the habit of keeping the Commander's schedule, I am afraid," he said, with a glint in his eye. "I found that a futile pursuit a long time back, Lieutenant. I'm sure should you ask, she'll make the time."

"Thank you, Commander. I will do just that. Oh and please, call me Brendan. I hate being called by my rank. It sounds so generic," Brendan said with a laugh.

"Alright, Brendan. I'll try," he smiled. "If there's nothing else I'm sure I can find something to occupy myself on the bridge."

"I'm sorry to have kept you, Commander. I would like to request one more thing, Sir," Brendan said.

"Naturally…" he replied.

"I would like to accompany the away teams to the surface unless you have something more pressing for me on the ship?"

"If you feel that your presence is required, Brendan, then I have no reason to keep you onboard. I think that you maybe only twiddling your thumbs should you stay. Check in with Mr. Kemmer, our Chief Intelligence Officer. I believe he is just about to leave for the Citadel Tower. If he is in a hurry, then follow him down."

"I'll ask him after I meet with Commander Arkham, Sir."

"No problem, then, Brendan. Just remember that should you need anything, my door is always open to you."

"Thank you, Commander. Likewise!

With that, Lane nodded and departed the office.
