Favours Under Lock and Key

Posted on Sat Apr 4th, 2009 @ 1:56pm by Lieutenant Commander Wesley Kemmer

659 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Wolves in Sheep's Clothing
Location: Intelligence Offices
Timeline: Current

“Come on, Jake, you owe me. Kemmer said as the viewed his ‘colleague’s’ image on his view screen in his office. The door was sealed and the room incarcerated in a silencing shield; an atom bomb could’ve gone off in there and aside from the damage no-one would be any the wiser. “Look back and just start remembering all those times I saved your neck... taking the quizzical look in Jake Callahan’s eyes in, he went on, “When fleet wanted to send you to the Sumaric sector when you wanted to go back and see your wife after she just had your son; I baled you out and took on the mission instead, or that time we were posted to the Juno and I took on the blame for that incomplete report, need I go on?

Jake sighed and looked down, he could’ve argued on as any Intelligence officer worth their salt could, but knew from experience of working with Kemmer that they would arrive at the same point – him agreeing. “I could get shot for this.

“I’ll make sure it’s a quick death.

“What I’m sending you is the complete file I have here, though I don’t think that you’re going to believe me on that given how much information is actually in here. There was a small pause as they noticed the last of the files had finished transferring. “I guess we’re even now.

“Not even close. Kemmer moistened his lips, he hadn’t had a drink in a while, and leant in closer to the monitor, as if the secrecy field wasn’t enough, “I’m under orders to keep this out of the logs; I’m passing those on to you as well.

“Wes, you’re asking me to change records and falsify a report; that goes a little too far for someone in my position.

“Payback’s a pataq, isn’t it? Kemmer jokingly added, pinning back to the time when he knew that Jake was stationed on a Klingon colony, and couldn’t wait to get out of there, the food was the worst. “I don’t like this any more than you do Jake, you know how much I like keeping a paper trail that’s saved my butt on more than one occasion. Taking in the mocking look on Jake’s face, “I know, and screwed with it a few times as well, but that’s not the point. You do this and then we’ll be even ok? Well, till the next time.

Jake Callahan sighed again, knowing that there would be a next time at some point. “Feel free to stay in touch Wes, even if it’s nothing about work. The look in his eyes denoted there was, at least at one point a strong friendship bond between them.

“You bet, take care huh? And thanks. The com channel was then closed and replaced with the all too familiar UFP seal before going blank completely. “Computer, deactivate the room seal and copy intelligence report on Captain Alexandra Harwood to the PADD.

“Room seal disengaged. And the small beep sounded from the PADD marked the completion of the file copy.

Kemmer took up the PADD and started to read. When Jake said that it was going to be a small data file he wasn’t joking, but this is what Commander Lane wanted and that’s what he was going to get. What he was also going to get was the report that he was meant to take with him last time about the Citadel escort, or lack thereof, which is probably something else he was not going to want to see. Technically, he didn’t actually ask for it, but he needed to see it all the same – the price for being the one in command; was he ever glad that he didn’t wear red.
