A Civil Act

Adriana paced with Anthony, rubbing his back to sooth him. He was fussy this afternoon. Gas, maybe. She patted his back, interspersing with the rubbing, all the while talking to him softly.
“Need a burp, Cub? It’s alright, my little love. Mommie’s here. Come on, give mommie a little burp. Just a little one? You’ll feel better, I promise,” she tried to coax him, eventually saying nonsense, just talking so he would hear her voice over his own crankiness.
Anthony fussed and squirmed. The bubble in his belly just wasn’t moving and nothing he did made it any better. His fussy noises were the only way he could tell Mommie that something was wrong so he fussed and squirmed some more.
Adriana walked and patted and soothed, getting more and more distressed as Anthony also became more and more distressed.
She was this close to going to sickbay when Anthony finally burped, also spitting up what had to be half of what he’d eaten last. Adriana had dropped the burp cloth during her pacing and frequent repositioning of the baby and spit up soaked into her sounder and ran down her arm.
She sighed and plopped down on the couch, still rocking a bit because she almost always rocked lately. Finally comfortable, Anthony wriggled against her and stuck his hand in his mouth, very soon closing his eyes and going to sleep. Crying and fussing for over an hour was enough to tire out anyone, especially someone less than a month old.
Adriana kept rocking for a few minutes, just to enjoy holding him for a few moments. Tired tears rose in her eyes. She should put him in his cradle, clean herself up, and take a nap while he slept. She was tired enough; she could easily nap until he woke for his next feeding. But right now she couldn’t summon up the energy to do anything but rock.
