Bad Tidings We Bring...

541 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Wolves in Sheep's Clothing
Location: Nagasaki's CIC and Archimedes' Bridge
Timeline: Current

ON:

Commander Lane sat on the Bridge, his right leg crossed over his left and his strong hand resting on his ankle as that, in turn, rested on his knee. In his free hand lay a PADD, chirping away as he scrolled through its text, thumbing at the button methodically. His eyes, however, rested on the carpeted deck before him, relaxed and out of focus.

"Commander," the young Ensign at the Operations terminal behind him spoke up. As the panel in front of her beeped and flashed, she hazardously tapped at the control. "I have a transmission from the Nagasaki's CIC on the surface." She looked up as the Commander arched his neck around to face her. "It's Ensign Carter…"

Lane simply nodded, his brow furrowed and locked. He swiftly turned to face the viewscreen wondering why the Counsellor was at the CIC when she should have been, neatly pressed and pristine, in her dress uniform at the tower where the negotiations were underway.

Carter was dishevelled and slightly out of breath as her face appeared on screen. "Commander Lane, I have some distressing news" she began.

The Trill suddenly shot up from his chair, gripping the armrests to lever himself out. "Ensign? What's happened? Are you all right?"

Carter went to remove hair from her eyes and then remembered Arkham's blood on her hands. She flicked her head back to try to remove it instead. "Sir, Commander Arkham has been attacked."

"Attacked? By whom? Where is she, Lucy? And what of the rest of the team?" A million shards of darkness pierced the Trill's mind.

"She was shot. We did not see the assailant and she has lost a good deal of blood. I tried to do my best for her but she has insisted on me returning here to tell you what happened. She should be being taken care of by the local medical crew as we speak, but I fear for her safety."

Lucy, although a master of her emotions, was beginning to realise how badly the day could have gone.

"Who is she with, Lucy?" Lane had to almost stop himself from screaming.

"Er," Lucy was trying to slow her shock by breathing deeply before each sentence, "Shran and Hughes are with her now, but the medics were on their way as I left. Sir, I think this was an attack aimed specifically for Commander Arkham."

"Right, Lucy," he said, turning to look over his should at the Ops Ensign. "Thank you." Nodding to her, he then faced Ensign Carter again. "I'm pulling you all up. Tell Mr. Parsons to leave the shuttle secured and we'll return for it another time. Gather yourselves together and then contact the ship. We'll grab you all in one beam. I don’t want to risk it at all, but I'd rather not perform multiple transports if that can be helped."

"Will do, sir." Lucy ended the transmission and stood to carry out her orders. A delayed reaction to the shock started in the pit of her stomach and she felt sick. The adrenalin that had been useful earlier in helping her to react was now making her shake.
