In The Dark
Location: The Archimedes
Timeline: Current

The room felt hot and stuffy as she paced up and down, wearing a pattern in the carpet. Ensign Carter was bothered by not only by her latent medical condition but also by the ignorance of the whole situation. What on earth could be wrong with her? She decided she had to try to ask the Commander one more time. This was killing her.
She tapped at her combadge, which chirped. =A= Carter to Commander Lane =A=. Her voice had a strange, strangled sounding quality to it, which she did her best to correct by clearing her throat. =A= Commander, please come in =A=.
She wondered what could be taking him so long.
The intercom sounded through the Commander's quarters, and he instinctively reached for the bedside table, slapping the palm of his hand down aiming for his badge. After the second attempt, the twitter sounded and he cleared his through.
"Lane here. Go ahead."
"Commander, I am sorry to bother you again, but I am... well rather disturbed."
The Trill used his elbow to shift his weight in his bed and lifted his torso from the plush mattress beneath him. Turning the shaded lamp on towering over the combadge, he sat up and squeezed his eyes with the pressure from his thumb and forefinger.
"It's my DNA, sir, I just want to know what is going on. Please!" The last word came out rather more urgently than she had meant it to sound but she could feel herself letting her anxiety getting the better of her.
"Ensign… Um, give me five minutes and secure yourself a console. Then contact me in my ready room. Understood?"
He tapped the cool casing of the combadge to close the channel and sighed with fatigue. It had been a long day and it did not look as though it was over just yet. Shifting himself out of the bed, he swung his legs around and heavily planted his feet on the carpet. As he stood, the sheets from the bed fell away from his naked body and whipped away from his waist. He located his pressed uniform, folded over the back of his chair as Mrs. Gray did for him every night, and dressed quickly. Exiting his quarters, he made the short walk to the bridge, via the turbolift, and entered his ready room. As he sealed the doors behind him, he sat at his desk and activated his console.
"Ensign Carter?"
"Commander". She immediately noticed his messy hair and half opened eyes and was apologetic. "I am so sorry, sir, I got you out of bed. This can wait till the morning."
"Lucy, it's quite all right. As I told you, my door is always open."
"All right, as long as you don't mind." She was sorry to have bothered him now but at the same time, anxious to find out what was happening. She leaned both elbows on the table in front of her and, bowing her head, ran both her hands through her blonde hair and looked up into the viewscreen to see Lane looking back at her. "It's my... medical condition, Commander Lane. I have to know what is going on. I have to know if I am .... normal!"
"Lucy," he started with in a sympathetic and worried tone. "Starfleet HQ are analysing your medical file. Until I have further instruction, I cannot discuss the matter with you. However, suffice it to say that I would not have allowed you to go on this mission had I thought that either your life… or those around you, should be in danger. Please. Until I am informed otherwise, I am not at liberty to debate this further. I am sorry, but am I understood?"
The Commander did not wait for a response as it pained his heart to shut out the one person this situation affected the most, and he closed the comm. channel. Sighing, and letting his heavy head fall into his hands, he closed his eyes tightly. He would need to speak to Admiral Nield, again. And he knew this.
Lucy couldn't quite believe that she had been cut off and her mouth remained open in surprise for a good thirty seconds after the viewscreen had gone black. The she closed her mouth, shut her eyes and took a deep breath in through her nose. If Commander Lane thought there was a good reason not to tell her the truth, she had to accept that. In the meantime, she would do a little digging of her own.
