350 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Quarantine!
Location: Starfleet Medical, Earth
Timeline: Shoreleave. 4 weeks in.

ON:

Elsie lay there, her head braced back against the pillow and the blinding lights above her drilling through to her soul. It had been four weeks since the Ranger had returned to Earth, and four weeks since Starfleet Medical had quarantined the captain and her crew. She had had no contact with any of them. Not even her First Officer, Commander T'mpest Michaels, and now her patience was wearing thin. She sat up, rather too briskly, and swung her dizzying legs over the end of the biobed. The sparse room was beginning to affect her. A cell more than a room.

She looked towards the door. The blinking red light on its side indicating to her, and possibly to the outside corridor, that Captain Elsie Halliwell was in lock-down. Her initial resistance to cooperate soon gave way, and a lot quicker than she expected. Her usual robust resolve lasted only five days before she convinced herself that accepting the medical staffs' whims were likely to make this confinement easier to brave. But that blinking red light served as a reminder that, despite her apparent freedom afforded to her as a citizen of the Federation, quarantine rules meant that her incarceration was unappealable.

She sighed and only glanced to the door as it breathed open, her brows lowered and defeated and her spirit now almost broken. "Feeding time already?" she managed, the plate of rations from earlier in the morning still untouched on the desk across the room. She then turned around and motioned over her shoulder to the glass, rectangular window framing three doctors stood behind manning large data PaDDs. "And you can tell the organ grinders that if they want to observe me anymore, they could at least have installed a two-way mirror. Standing and gawping at me for six-hours straight is impressively irritating." The nurse remained silent and exchanged one heavy dinner tray with another. "Still holding out on me, huh?" Elsie then retorted, shaking her head. The nurse left as silently as she had come.

"Give me strength," Elsie muttered under her breath.
