ON:

Ship's Counsellor Ensign Lucy Carter, personal log 63888.04.

Having returned from the surface and the unexpected occurrence that happened there, I decided to visit the EMH again to see if he will guide me through some logical thinking.

I went to the holodeck and activated my pub programme, then checked with the computer that the EMH was not currently in use before calling him into the scene.

"Please state... oh it's you again, Ensign. Hello. I hope you have not dragged me away from any proper duties".

"No, doctor, I have not. I checked. How are you?"

"How am I? I am a collection of photons held together with a forcef..."

I interrupted him to avoid the usual nonsense. "I mean, doctor, how do you feel? And if you say "with my hands" I shall deactivate you!"

"Oh very well, Ensign, I am "all right thank you"."

I was pleased and smiled at him. "I am afraid I have been involved in an altercation on the planet surface" I continued.

"Yes," he replied. "I have read the official report. I trust you were not injured?"

"Not at all" I said, "but there was a lot of Commander Arkham's blood".

"No doubt the Commander has a lot to spare" he said and almost attempted a smile.

"It's good to talk to you, doctor" I said. "The usual?" At his nod, I went over to the bar and got us a drink each. As I sat back down opposite the doctor, I couldn't help myself but ask about my DNA again.

"You know perfectly well I can't tell you anything, Ensign Carter" he said, "and I wish you would stop asking me."

"I do understand," I said, but can you tell me one thing? Is my rogue DNA issue innate or acquired?"

He stared at the flames to the holofire and took a swig of his synthanol before responding. Looking at me directly, he finally replied "well I don't think there is any harm in letting you know that the problem you have would not have been present at your birth."

I was delighted at this breakthrough and told him so. I now know that the 2% of DNA that is not mine was something that happened to me in the first two years of my life. And that was something that I could find out about.

I drained my drink, stood and said "doctor, it has been a pleasure to sit with you, as always. I look forward to our next meeting."

The doctor stood and sighed. "I suppose I can tolerate your company" he said. "Nobody else activates me just to chat."

I smiled at him and ended the programme.
