Personality & Traits
| Personal History | Orions are rare in Starfleet, and Telana is keenly aware of her semi-unique status. Fortunately, semi-unique is a position she's used to. Abandoned at birth by her parents and absorbed into the Syndicate, she was raised by an elderly madam who spotted a certain intelligence in the child that bore cultivation. While she received the education typical of Orion Syndicate women, including the essentials of pheremonal persuasion, dance, and etiquette, her mentor never allowed her to move completely into the world of courtesans and slavers. In spite of the youth's blossoming beauty, the madam saw to it that Telana was schooled in accounting and mathematics--the mechanical side of Orion life--with an eye toward becoming a Syndicate administrator. Telana harbors no illusions, and suspects that her mentor's true goal was simply to secure a comfortable retirement by grooming a doting protege, but at the time she grudgingly undertook the lessons administered to her. In a twist of fate, Telana's mentor was killed in an internecine struggle, one of the many twisted games played in the dim halls of the Syndicate. Freed from her mentor, Telana found to her dismay that she was a woman without a calling. Her managerial training was incomplete, and her "slave" training had never really begun. Bereft of her protector within the ranks of the Syndicate, Telana found that she could count on little support. The best option open to her was the one she took, and she fled Orion space for the Federation. To back her Asylum claim, Telana opted to join Starfleet, embracing Federation society. Her Academy time was difficult, starting with simple physical problems. The young men on campus created a stir until she began taking a pheremonal supressant. Once she had her biology under control she was able to concentrate on her studies, but she chafed against many of the Academy's regulations. Her head for administration and numbers led her initially into Operations, but she discovered a love for Engineering in an intro course, switched her course track, and has never looked back. Unfortunately, while she loved the subject, she was far from good at it. She spent long nights (and seduced several tutors) to keep her grades squeaking by, and graduated at the bottom of her class in the unenvied Ensign Dunsel position, but happily accepted her commission. While her engineering skill has improved since the Academy, her real strength lies in being able to assemble and administer teams. Her interpersonal skills make her especially valuable in Engineering, where officers stereotypically have little in the way of social ability. This strength saw her transferred aboard USS Ranger, her first posting as an assistant department head. Telana views the world as an interlocking puzzle, with pieces that can be moved and manipulated by those skilled in doing so. She is a capable officer, though sometimes must fight against her biology and the stereotypical reactions it inspires. |
